LINKS BY GEORGE NEWSLETTER OCTOBER 22, 2013

Ten years have passed since my first Links by George Newsletter.

At that time, I was terrified of getting involved with computers and only when my
friend Terence McKenna convinced me of the importance of information sharing
did I slowly get involved. But even though I seem to spend most of my day researching
stories, I am still not very digital or tech oriented. Now I extend thanks to my
friend Paul who came to visit us from Australia and has been able to upgrade
the presentation of my social networking through Facebook as well as the newsletter.
I hope you find this new format easier to read and navigate as we set sail for new
adventures of trying to make sense of the rapidly changing events in the world and
how we can make clear decisions in the process.

I now also have a page on Facebook which has the same stories, links and images as the newsletter. You can access it through https://www.facebook.com/linksbygeorge

I would also like to ask if anyone has contact information for certain musicians that often come to Hawaii.  We are organizing a benefit here on the Big Island for needy people that are in critical need for medical help and are without insurance or money to cover the cost of any treatment. If any one knows how to reach Willie Nelson, Graham Nash, David Crosby, Neil Young or Mickey Hart, please let me know.

For the past 10 years have been sending my "Links by George" newsletter,
blog and Facebook postings which I describe as "an eclectic list of links of
articles, music and quotes relating to alternative lifestyles, culture, shamanism,
spirituality, politics, conspiracies, art images and environmental issues".
I arrange the format so as to flow from one story to another as well as have the
option to find out more details on any particular story. My early influences included
networking articles from the 60's counterculture where a truly holistic newspaper
included perspectives of a new age and cultural renaissance as well as the need
for political activism and environmental awareness.

YOUR DONATION OF ANY SIZE IS VERY HELPFUL AND MUCH APPRECIATED

I am committed to networking these articles and stay many hours a day researching.
I would like to thank the friends and readers that have sent in donations to this service
I provide. I am not asking for anyone to feel that they have to donate. My service is from
the heart and it is a pleasure for me to outreach to as many people as possible.
Many people write me back that they have benefited from the articles and thus the information
provides a service. However, if anyone can send even a small donation to me through pay pal or otherwise, my family and I would be very appreciative.
In any case, the "Links by George" will go on. Please feel free to forward this
newsletter as well as my Facebook messages as networking information is a
vital tool of awareness. I would be happy to add other interested people to my
mailing list as well.

If you prefer to send a check or money order, our address is:

I can also be contacted through Facebook on either of my two accounts

HIGH CONSCIOUSNESS:

The Origins of Halloween: Season of the Crone. Halloween, Samhain, All Hallows, All Saints or Hallow-Eve is the season of the Crone. In ancient paganism, the word Crone denoted an elder priestess or tribal matriarch; a cognate word is "crown," the symbol of a leader. The word was made pejorative when the Christian Church redefined all elder priestesses of the old religion as malevolent witches. Similarly, the word "hag" was once derived from Greek hagia—a holy woman—and also became a Christianized term for a witch.

GLOBAL NEWS

Fukushima Leaks Radioactive Water Into Pacific 03 Oct 2013 A new leak of highly radioactive water is believed to be flowing into the Pacific Ocean from Japan's stricken nuclear plant after a storage tank overflowed. A Tokyo Electric Power Company (Tepco) official said workers at Fukushima detected the toxic fluid dripping from the top of a tank when they were patrolling the site. Tepco estimates 430 litres of the water, which contains highly radioactive doses of strontium, has leaked outside a concrete barrier surrounding the tank.

The partial shutdown of the federal government has entered its sixteenth day and the nation is now on the brink of a default as the government’s borrowing authority ends tomorrow. Martial Law and the Economy: Is Homeland Security Preparing for the Next Wall Street Collapse? Reports are that the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is engaged in a massive, covert military buildup. An article in the Associated Press in February confirmed an open purchase order by DHS for 1.6 billion rounds of ammunition. According to an op-ed in Forbes, that’s enough to sustain an Iraq-sized war for over twenty years. DHS has also acquired heavily armored tanks, which have been seen roaming the streets. Evidently somebody in government is expecting some serious civil unrest. The question is, why?

Americans Are Being Treated to Political Theater: Forget the Government Shutdown – It’s About Shutting YOU Down. The government is red, the middle class is dead & they want us all dead. Americans are being treated to political theater at its finest. It’s not a theater of entertainment, however, but a coliseum of enslavement where in the world of deception, perception becomes reality. This theater requires audience participation, where we, the theater-goers, become part of the play. We are a truly captive audience, entranced into mindlessly choosing sides at the frenzied urging of the corporate media and partisan cheerleaders firmly seated behind the microphones and television cameras of the nationally syndicated media

That was the beginning of the government's move to pass food safety risks on to customers, and, more distressingly, to meat processors themselves. The move is continuing

Unease in Hawaii’s Cornfields. The balmy tropical isles here seem worlds apart from the expansive cornfields of the Midwest, but Hawaii has become the latest battleground in the fight over genetically modified crops. The state has become a hub for the development of genetically engineered corn and other crops that are sold to farmers around the globe. Monsanto and other seed companies have moved here en masse, and corn now sprouts on thousands of acres where sugar cane or pineapples once grew. But activists opposed to biotech crops have joined with residents who say the corn farms expose them to dust and pesticides, and they are trying to drive the companies away, or at least rein them in. The companies counter that their operations are safe and that the industry is essential to Hawaii’s economy. In the last two weeks, legislative committees on the islands of Kauai and Hawaii have approved proposed ordinances that would restrict the ability of the seed companies to operate. The Kauai bill will go before the full County Council on Tuesday

Petition against a Monsanto executive from winning this year’s "Nobel Prize of agriculture" -- the prestigious World Food Prize -- for creating GMOs. In an obscene development, a Monsanto executive is winning this year’s "Nobel Prize of agriculture" -- the prestigious World Food Prize -- for creating GMOs. Receiving it legitimizes the sort of rampant genetic modification Monsanto pioneered, and helps validate a ruthless business model that impoverishes farmers and monopolizes our food. If that wasn't baffling enough, the founder of Syngenta, the same biotech giant joining Bayer in suing Europe to keep selling bee-killing pesticides, will also win the prize -- and with it, a share of the $250,000 prize money. We cannot allow this prize to legitimize frankenfoods and bee killers. The ceremony is in less than two weeks, so we need to act now.

Denver floats new rules that could make even the odor of pot a crime. Even the smell of marijuana wafting from your backyard could be illegal if Denver City Council in Colorado USA passes a new ordinance. Denver officials, responding to fears that public pot consumption could become an ever-present problem in the Mile High City, will propose a set of new rules for open consumption and possession of marijuana. The ordinance, being introduced at a committee meeting Monday in advance of the legalization of retail pot sales in January, would specifically ban marijuana from parks and the 16th Street Mall. It also would prohibit smoking on private property if it is visible to the public, such as on a front porch or in a car, or if the odor of pot could be detected from a neighboring property

"Common experience shows how much rarer is moral courage than physical bravery. A thousand men will march to the mouth of the cannon where one man will dare espouse an unpopular cause . . . True courage and manhood come from the consciousness of the right attitude toward the world, the faith in one's purpose, and the sufficiency of one's own approval as a justification for one's own acts." - Clarence Darrow, Resist Not Evil
"A good soldier is a blind, heartless, soulless, murderous machine. He is not a man. His is not a brute, for brutes kill only in self defense. All that is human in him, all that is divine in him, all that constitutes the man has been sworn away when he took the enlistment roll. "A people at war have become in the most literal sense obedient, respectful, trustful children again, full of that naive faith in the all-wisdom and all-power of the adult who takes care of them, imposes his mild but necessary rule upon them and to whom they lose their responsibility and anxieties. In this recrudescence of the child, there is great comfort, and a certain influx of power. On most people the strain of being an independent adult weighs heavily . . ." - Randolph Bourne, The State
"War is a quarrel between two thieves too cowardly to fight their own battle; therefore they take boys from one village and another village, stick them into uniforms, equip them with guns, and let them loose like wild beasts against each other." - Thomas Carlyle
"Not only do . . . rulers keep many millions of men whose only trade is war, but these must be supported in worse than useless idleness by the labor of the poor. Still other millions are trained to war and are ever ready to answer to their master's call, to desert their homes and trades and offer up their lives to satisfy the vain ambitions of the ruler of the state. Millions more must give their strength and lives to build forts and ships, make guns and cannon and all the modern implements of war. Apart from any moral question of the right of man to slay his fellow man, all this great burden rests upon the poor. The vast expense of war comes from the production of the land and must serve to weaken and impair its industrial strength." - Clarence Darrow, Resist Not Evil
"Nationalism is an infantile disease. It is the measles of mankind." - Albert Einstein (attributed)
"We went to war with Mexico for peace, humanity and honor, yet emerged from the contest with an extension of territory beyond the dreams of political avarice. We went to war with Spain for relief of an oppressed people [the Cubans], and at the close found ourselves in possession of vast and rich insular dependencies [primarily the Philippines] and with a pretty tight grasp upon the country for relief of whose oppressed people we took up arms. We could hardly have profited more had 'territorial aggrandizement' been the spirit of our purpose and heart of our hope. The slightest acquaintance with history shows that powerful republics are the most warlike and unscrupulous of nations." - Ambrose Bierce, Warlike America
"The man who can face vilification and disgrace, who can stand up against the popular current, even against his friends and his country when he know he is right, who can defy those in authority over him, who can take punishment and prison and remain steadfast-that is a man of courage. The fellow whom you taunt as a 'slacker' because he refuses to turn murderer-he needs courage. But do you need much courage just to obey orders, to do as you are told and to fall in line with thousands of others to the tune of general approval and the Star Spangled Banner?" - Alexander Berkman
"Patriotism is fierce as a fever, pitiless as the grave and blind as a stone." - Ambrose Bierce
"The surest way to corrupt a youth is to instruct him to hold in higher esteem those who think alike than those who think differently."
\Friedrich Nietzsche
"We place no race or people above any other, acknowledge no superiority in any culture, honor no special privilege in any nation, and have no respect for any creed that limits the absolute freedom of the human mind." - ClassWarFilms
'A small body of determined spirits fired by an unquenchable faith in their mission can alter the course of history.' Mohandas K. Gandhi
"Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful committed individuals can change the world. In fact, it's the only thing that ever has." -
Margaret Mead
"My friends, love is better than anger. Hope is better than fear. Optimism is better than despair. So let us be loving, hopeful and optimistic. And we'll change the world." - Jack Layton
"Is there any point in public debate in a society where hardly anyone has been taught how to think, while millions have been taught what to think?" - Peter Hitchens
"There is no absurdity so palpable but that it may be firmly planted in the human head if you only begin to inculcate it before the age of five, by constantly repeating it with an air of great solemnity." - Arthur Schopenhauer
"You've gotta dance like there's nobody watching,
Love like you'll never be hurt,
Sing like there's nobody listening,
And live like it's heaven on earth."
-William W. Purkey
