Links By George January 3, 2010

A happy holidays greetings to all. There are solutions being offered for a
couple of problems associated with my newsletter/blog and radio show.
Many of my mailings are going by mistake into spam boxes. One solution
yahoo has offered me is that if everyone receiving or wanting to receive
my emails would add my email address to their address book, the mailings
would not be received as spam. If there is such a problem, I would probably
have to send this message by itself without a newsletter as it might get
into the spam box anyway. So try it out if you like and
add gsrain@yahoo.com as well as gsrain@gmail.com into
your address book.

Many friends have also been asking me if there is a solution
to being able to listen to my radio show since it is on at awkward
hours based on time zones. There is a free program that I have
heard about that allows the recording of live streaming radio shows
such as mine and then you can listen to it whatever time is convenient.
Here is the program:

Lots of articles again this issue and hopefully some of which are
interesting to all. The featured artist this time is Fred Weidmann
whose wonderful images appear on the top part of the bottom
section of the blog.
I have started using a breakdown of each of the sections of my
newsletter with this edition.
In the first section, I divide Lifestyle
into subsections High Consciousness, Arts, Science, Environment,
and Health. In the National Section I subdivided into War, Political,
Economic and Surveillance. Of course many of the articles don't fit
into any of such categorization, but in general, it could be an easier
approach to navigation.

The newsletter format allows for easier skimming of headlines
as well as for dial up in general. The blog is formatted such that
the articles appear in the middle part. On the right side are a column
of images and videos. Once you scroll down the right side column to
the end, the section of art starts with the most recent featured art first.
The quotes of the week and music articles of the week appear on the
bottom of this section as well.

With a census of slightly over 300 million in a world of almost

QUOTES:

The Desiderata
Go placidly amid the noise and haste,
and remember what peace there may be in silence.
As far as possible, without surrender, be on good terms with all persons.
Speak your truth quietly and clearly; and listen to others,
even to the dull and ignorant; they too have their story.
Avoid loud and aggressive persons; they are vexations to the spirit.
If you compare yourself with others, you may become vain or bitter,
for always there will be greater and lesser persons than yourself.
Enjoy your achievements as well as your plans.
Keep interested in your own career, however humble,
it's a real possession in the changing fortunes of time.
Exercise caution in your business affairs, for the world is full of trickery.
But let this not blind you to what virtue there is;
many persons strive for high ideals, and everywhere life is full of heroism.
Be yourself.
Especially do not feign affection. Neither be cynical about love;
for in the face of all aridity and disenchantment,
it is as perennial as the grass.
Take kindly the counsel of the years,
gracefully surrendering the things of youth.
Nurture strength of spirit to shield you in sudden misfortune.
But do not distress yourself with dark imaginings.
Many fears are born of fatigue and loneliness.
Beyond a wholesome discipline, be gentle with yourself.
You are a child of the universe no less than the trees and the stars;
you have a right to be here.
And whether or not it is clear to you,
no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should.
Therefore be at peace with God, whatever you conceive him to be.
And whatever your labors and aspirations, in the noisy confusion of life,
keep peace in your soul.
With all its sham, drudgery and broken dreams, it is still a beautiful world.
Be cheerful. Strive to be happy.
Max Ehrmann

"This focus on money and power may do wonders in the marketplace, but it creates a tremendous crisis in our society. People who have spent all day learning how to sell themselves and to manipulate others are in no position to form lasting friendships or intimate relationships... Many Americans hunger for a different kind of society -- one based on principles of caring, ethical and spiritual sensitivity, and communal solidarity. Their need for meaning is just as intense as their need for economic security." : Michael Lerner

"Now my friends, I am opposed to the system of society in which we live today, not because
I lack the natural equipment to do for myself but because I am not satisfied to make
myself comfortable knowing that there are thousands of my fellow men who suffer for t
he barest necessities of life. We were taught under the old ethic that man's business
on this earth was to look out for himself. That was the ethic of the jungle; the ethic of
the wild beast. Take care of yourself, no matter what may become of your fellow man.
Thousands of years ago the question was asked; ''Am I my brother's keeper?'' That
question has never yet been answered in a way that is satisfactory to civilized society.
Yes, I am my brother's keeper. I am under a moral obligation to him that is inspired,
not by any maudlin sentimentality but by the higher duty I owe myself. What would
you think me if I were capable of seating myself at a table and gorging myself with
food and saw about me the children of my fellow beings starving to death." -
Eugene V. Debs: - 1908 speech
=
" I am not interested in picking up crumbs of compassion thrown from the table
of someone who considers himself my master. I want the full menu of rights." -
Bishop Desmond Tutu:
=
"Fear is not the natural state of civilized people". - Aung San Suu Kyi:
"Necessity is the plea for every infringement of human freedom. It is the
argument of tyrants; it is the creed of slaves.": William Pitt - (1759-1806)
British Prime Minister (1783-1801, 1804-06) during the French Revolutionary
and Napoleonic wars. - Source: Speech, House of Commons, 18 November 1783
=
"There are some things the general public does not need to know, and shouldn't.
I believe democracy flourishes when the government can take legitimate steps
to keep its secrets and when the press can decide whether to print what it knows"
The late Katharine Graham, owner of the Washington Post
=
The foulest damage to our political life comes not from the 'secrets' which they
hide from us, but from the little bits of half-truth and disinformation which they
do tell us. These are already pre-digested, and then are sicked up as little
gobbits of authorised spew. The columns of defence correspondents in the
establishment sheets serve as the spittoons.: E.P. Thompson, British historian
