Links By George December 16th

Greetings from a hot week in Nimbin.
High temperatures and creeks drying up are not a happy signal but the community still radiates positive feelings, open hearts and minds that reflect out of the box. I have been enjoying my radio presenting Wed. nights, but no solution for how someone in other time zones can download the internet live stream to listen to at a more convenient time.

Link to my radio show live stream on Wed. nights between 8-11 pm (Sydney time)

A common and natural result of an undue respect for law is that you may see a file of soldiers, colonel, captain, corporal, privates, powder-monkeys, and all marching in admirable order over hill and dale to the wars, against their wills, ay, against their common sense and consciences, which makes it very steep marching indeed, and produces a palpitation of the heart. PUNMASTER MUSIC ARTICLES:

Lost John Lennon Tapes Allegedly Found

by Paul Cashmere

A recording claimed to be a rare and unreleased John Lennon recording session has gone on sale in the USA.

The recording available at www.lennontapes.com claims to have been recorded on August 19, 1980 at the Hit Factory in New York.

John Lennon and Yoko Ono were recording the ‘Double Fantasy’ album as well as ‘Milk and Honey’ at the Hit Factory.

These recordings if for real sound like vocal warm-ups for John and feature covers of ‘Mystery Train’, ‘Stay’ and ‘Dream Lover’.

Info at the lennontapes site states, “This 13 minute selection of John’s vocals, singing from the vocal booth on August 19th 1980 was recorded on high quality tape. From that master recording, listen to some great moments of John speaking to the band, kidding around with his recording engineer and as he performs three songs, “Dream Lover” with a medley into “Stay A Little Bit Longer”. He then jokes around with everyone and then performs Mystery Train (the song Elvis Presley had made famous).”

If the recording is real, then surely Yoko Ono would own the rights. How it came to be released via a third party still remains unknown.

It is claimed that video director Jay Dubin filmed John and Yoko on that day at the studio with the intention of producing music videos for the ‘Double Fantasy’ album. None of that footage has ever surfaced but this audio recording is claimed to be outtakes.

We await a comment from Yoko Ono to see if this is real.

John Lennon Tapes Claimed To Be Legit

by Paul Cashmere

A recording of previously unreleased songs sung by John Lennon is for real, says Brian Koppelman.

Koppelman tells Undercover that Lennon gave him the tape in 1980 while he was in at the Hit Factory in New York watching him record.

A few days ago, I asked the question of ownership of the tapes. “First off, Yoko does not own this recording,” Koppelman tells undercover.com.au. “This tape came from John. I had lent John $100 in the Hit Factory and he handed me the tape to hold onto. He could not find his wallet while he was there. He never paid me back and I am now sell the collateral that he used”.

However, Beatle fans contacting Undercover say the songs have been available as bootlegs for years. Steve Rosetta from OffTheBeatleTrack.com says the original source of the tapes was Elliott Mintz's program 'The Lost Lennon Tapes' 15 years ago. In fact, he says he says the same bootlegs have been available on eBay for the past 4 years.

That isn't stopping Koppelman who 29 years later says it is he who is making the tape public. “We want the fans of the Beatles and John Lennon to enjoy the quality of this recording and the historic value. This was not put out for critics to bash, it is made available for everyone to enjoy. It is the anniversary of John's death tomorrow, let say a prayer for him and what he believed in. I only wish his dreams could have come true”.

He also says that he is the rightful owner of the recordings, not John’s wife Yoko. “This is absolutely a legal and legit offering. Everyone that purchases from LennonTapes.com will be delivered for Christmas between the 23rd - 24th this great Christmas present,” he says.

Money raised from the sales will go to charity he says. “This is to help raise funds for the Emmanuel Orphanage of Tijuana, which has 27 girls and over 40 boys that are in need of support,” he tells Undercover. The reason that we are doing pre-orders is due to the fact that it would be put up on YouTube and elsewhere for free and would defeat the purpose the Orphanage fund raise”.
Beatle and Lennon fans remain unconvinced of the authenticity of the ownership of the tapes. Koppelman claims they are his.

Lennon’s version of Dream Lover and Stay has been around on YouTube for more than a year.

ERIC WOOLFSON, ALAN PARSONS PROJECT FOUNDER, DIES
Eric Woolfson, one of the founding members of the Alan Parsons Project, has died at the age of 64. Woolfson co-founded the band with Alan Parsons and along with being the group’s principle songwriter, he also sang on some of their biggest hits including “Time,” “Don’t Answer Me” and “Eye in the Sky.” A post put on Woolfson’s Facebook page Wednesday announced his passing saying, “We are very sad to have to tell you that Eric Woolfson passed away in the early hours of this morning after a long and brave battle with cancer. He very much enjoyed seeing all your kind comments and posts on this Facebook page and his family wanted to thank you for your appreciation of his work.” At the time of his death, Eric was reportedly working on at least two projects. Bob Dylan is upset over some critic's reactions to his Christmas in the Heart holiday album. Some have speculated that the set and the Must Be Santa video were some elaborate joke. Dylan said in a statement:

"Critics like that are on the outside looking in. They are definitely not fans or the audience that I play to. They would have no gut level understanding of me and my work, what I can and can't do -- the scope of it all. Even at this point in time they don't know what to make of me. These songs are part of my life, just like folk songs. You have to play them straight, too... The songs don't require much acting. They kind of play themselves."

Twisted Sister guitarist Eddie Ojeda underwent emergency back surgery Thursday after experiencing pain that stopped him from sitting or standing. He had a ruptured disc repaired and is recuperating, hoping to play at the group's Sunday night show in New York.

The band is currently out on it's Twisted Christmas tour and had to enlist Dan McCafferty, who plays in Dee Snider's solo band, to fill in.
There will be a tribute to Neil Young at the upcoming Vancouver Winter Olympics. The show will February 18 at the Queen Elizabeth Theatre and will include Broken Social Scene, Ron Sexsmith, Iron & Wine and others.

Les Paul, Frankie Valli and Count Basie are among the 15 people selected for induction into the New Jersey Hall of Fame. They will go in alongside Jack Nicholson, Woodrow Wilson, Danny DeVito, Phillip Roth, Judy Blume, Carl Lewis, Michael Graves, William Brennan, Susan Sarandon, Wally Schirra, Larry Doby and Alice Paul. Induction is in May.

There are plans for another Jimi Hendrix movie. Legendary Pictures is in development on Slide, a fictional take on the 1969 "lost weekend." Ray "R.H." Greene is writing and directing.
Paul Anka and his wife Anna have gone at it again. According to TMZ, the police were called to their Thousand Oaks, California home on Thursday morning after receiving two 911 calls. Officials said that there were no injuries but there was "one hell of a stand-off." TMZ spoke with Anka who said he has been living in a hotel due to problems in the relationship and he had just stopped to take their children to school when the altercation started.

The second volume in the Costello Show series of archive live releases by Elvis Costello will be released on January 12 with the July 4, 1978 show at Hollywood High School.
Pearl, the daughter of Meat Loaf, will release her debut album, Little Immaculate White Fox, on January 19 via Megaforce. She has worked with Motley Crue and the solo Nikki Sixx over the last decade.
Rolling Stone magazine is about to jump into the restaurant and bar business with the opening of a venue at the Hollywood and Highland Center in Los Angeles. The 10,000 square foot space will be "an exciting blend of equal parts restaurant, bar, lounge and upscale private-event space." The location is near landmarks like Grauman's Chinese Theater, the Hollywood Walk of Fame and the Kodak Theatre.
RARE PINK FLOYD FOOTAGE DISCOVERED
Here’s a story that will make any Pink Floyd fan wish they lived in England. The BBC has uncovered rare Syd Barrett-era footage of the band that was thought to have been lost, and the network will air it next month. The 42-year-old video is of the band performing “See Emily Play” on the famous British music show Top of the Pops. The tapes were thought to be destroyed or thrown out, as the BBC often does with boxes when they need storage space, but two tapes of the show were discovered. Although they were badly damaged, the British Film Institute was able to restore them and the BBC is set to air them on January 9th. Hopefully clips will leak to the Internet soon too.
A MOVIE ABOUT THE KINKS
There is a feature film in the works about The Kinks and famed documentarian Julien Temple is set to direct the flick. The movie is tentatively titled You Really Got Me and Kinks singer Ray Davies told us about it.
(Cut #1) “They want to make a movie, a Kinks movie, which will be a fun project. I think it’s like a cradle to the grave movie. It’s a very ambitious project, very ambitious.”
Julien Temple, who directed docs on the Sex Pistols and the Glastonbury festival, further described the movie to ScreenDaily.com saying, “At the heart of it is the extraordinary love-hate relationship between these two brothers,” adding, “I think it’s a very rich social, cultural nexus around The Kinks. Their story is the untold story of all those big bands of the 1960s.” No release date or cast has been announced yet.
RONNIE WOOD ARRESTED
Rolling Stone Ronnie Wood has been arrested on suspicion of assaulting his girlfriend. According to the BBC, a police spokesperson would only say, “We can confirm that a 62-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of assault in connection with a domestic incident.” However, the guitarist’s rep told the network that Ronnie was arrested after an “incident” but declined to comment further. Ronnie has been released on bail until a later date in January, pending “further enquiries.” Wood divorced his wife of 24 years last month after leaving her for his current girlfriend, 20-year-old model Ekaterina Ivanova.
• In 2008, Ronnie was admitted to rehab to help with his alcohol addiction.
• In the past, Ronnie hasn’t been violent, in fact, he told us that there have been many times he’s had to act as a mediator between his Rolling Stones bandmates, Mick Jagger and Keith Richards.
• (Cut #1) “On quite a few occasions, I’ve had to be kind of diplomatically getting them speaking, on the phone or they misread things or something in the press that one of them said about the other and it got exaggerated and there was a bad vibe going on between them. So I just said, ‘Look, I’ve just spoken to him and he’s not really mad at you,’ and he said, ‘Well I’m not really mad at him either, blah, blah, blah,’ sort of get them talking and they’d iron out the rough spots, you know.”

JULIAN LENNON RELEASES SONG IN TRIBUTE TO LUCY
Julian Lennon hasn’t made music for over ten years but John Lennon’s son is back with a new album and a four-song EP that features the charity song, “Lucy,” which pays tribute to his childhood friend, Lucy Vodden, who inspired The Beatles’ hit “Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds.” Vodden died in September of complications from lupus and proceeds from Julian’s track go towards the Lupus Foundation, which works to fight the autoimmune disease. The Lucy EP hits shelves on the 15th and Julian’s new album, Everything Changes, is due out in the spring. Learn more at TheRevolution.com and hear “Lucy” at Billboard.com.

BACHMAN AND TURNER GO INTO OVERDRIVE AGAIN
Bachman-Turner Overdrive’s Randy Bachman and Fred Turner have reunited to work on the title track of Randy’s next album, Rock N Roll is the Only Way Out. The guitarist spoke to Billboard.com about the song, describing it as “really rootsy, really AC/DC, Led Zeppelin, really fun, eager, hungry rock n’ roll.” If that weren’t enough Bachman and Turner plan to tour behind the effort, though dates haven’t been announced yet. When they do hit the road, they won’t be joined by the rest of their BTO bandmates and will have to consider what name they tour under since drummer Rob Bachman and guitarist Blair Thornton have sued to prevent the duo from promoting themselves as anything similar to Bachman-Turner Overdrive. Album and tour details will be announced at a press conference on Tuesday but the record is due out next fall.

AC/DC’S ARGENTIAN SHOWS FILMED FOR DVD
AC/DC played in Buenos Aires last night and they’ll perform there again tonight and Sunday night. According to 10Musica.com, all three shows at the River Plate Stadium will be filmed for a future DVD release. No further details on the disc have been released yet.

BECK & CLAPTON TO PLAY TOGETHER IN NYC, CANADA
Jeff Beck and Eric Clapton plan to perform three shows together in North America. The rockers, who took the stage together in Japan last February, will again collaborate this February when they play in New York on the 18th, Toronto on the 21st and Montreal on the 23rd. The pair is already scheduled to perform two sold-out gigs in London that month. At the shows, the former Yardbirds members will perform both together and apart. Tickets for the New York concert go on sale on December 12th while the Canadian gigs will be for sale this week. Learn more at EricClapton.com.
• Of the upcoming shows, Clapton said in a statement, “I’ve always considered Jeff Beck to be one of the finest guitar players around. He’s a friend, a great guy, and a truly gifted musician. We had such a fun time in Japan that it seemed natural to play again.
• Beck has been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame twice, while Clapton is the only three-time inductee.

SEE DAVID LEE ROTH’S ART
David Lee Roth is not only a singer, he’s an artist too. The Van Halen frontman has uploaded a bunch of pictures of his artwork. Roth calls his pieces “authentic originals and incompetent imitations” and you can take a look at them at DavidLeeRoth.com.
• Roth has designed stage clothes, choreographed, orchestrated photo shoots and designed t-shirts for Van Halen.
NO MORE YES?
Rick Wakeman is no longer in Yes and he is pretty upset about the current state of the band. The group is touring overseas without singer Jon Anderson, who originally bowed out due to illness but now that he is better, hasn’t been allowed back in the band due to contractual issues with his substitute, Benoit David. Rick filled us in on what’s going on with Yes.
(Cut #1) “My personal opinion is you can’t have Yes without Jon singing. It’s like having Led Zeppelin without Robert Plant, The Who without [Roger] Daltrey, it just doesn’t happen. But what I think is very sneaky and what really annoys me is not, in the advertising, saying who is in the band. I mean, I’m just getting hundreds and hundreds of emails from people who’ve gone on to say, ‘Hey, we arrived there to see the Yes show. You’re not there, Jon’s not there, what’s going on?’”
So will there ever be a chance of the classic line-up hitting the road together? Probably not, as Rick explained.
(Cut #2) “It is upsetting and I think the tragic part of it is, I mean I think that Yes deserves, because we’re all getting on a bit, Jon’s in his mid-60s, everybody’s in their 60’s, and so things have to wind down and I think Yes deserved a really special and dignified wind-down and it’s not getting it. And now the classic line-up, I can’t see it ever working again.”
Fans can still get their fix of Rick Wakeman by picking up his new DVD. It’s the Hampton Court Palace performance from earlier this year of his 1973 solo concept album The Six Wives of Henry VIII. The disc is currently on shelves.

IS A KINKS REUNION IN THE CARDS?
The Kinks last played together in 1996 but recently, there have been rumors of a reunion. One hurdle the group will have to overcome first though is Dave Davies’ recovery. In 2004, the guitarist suffered a stroke and his brother and former bandmate, Kinks singer Ray Davies, filled us in on how Dave is doing.
(Cut #3) “I heard that Dave is doing some dates early next year which is great because there is always talk of The Kinks reforming to do some stuff. I said to him, because he got sick four or five years ago, and I said do some small dates first and he’s taken that advice. He’s doing some try-out dates, which is good.”
So if Dave’s dates go well, is a Kinks reunion in the cards? Ray told us his thoughts.
(Cut #4) “We’ll see about that. I think he just wants to see how this goes. He’s taking it a day at a time, which is a smart move. But the rest of us, I’ve played with the original drummer, I’ve done a few demos with him and I’ve done some recording with [keyboardist] Ian [Gibbons] and [drummer] Mick [Avory] and [bassist] Jim [Rodford], so we’re on top of it. I’d only do it if we had a direction to go in, a new musical… a new outlet as well as doing the old stuff.”
While fans hope for and wait for a Kinks reunion, they can go out and buy Ray’s latest album. It’s called The Kinks Choral Collection and includes new studio recordings and compositions of the band’s songs
GOSSIP: STONES TO TOUR NEXT YEAR
If you believe hearsay printed in British tabloids then listen up. A source claiming they’re quoting Ronnie Wood’s girlfriend told England’s The Sun that The Rolling Stones are planning a world tour in 2010. The insider told the paper’s gossip column that Wood’s ladyfriend is not supposed to talk about the trek since it hasn’t been finalized but she couldn’t resist telling a few of her closest pals. Not surprisingly, there has been nothing official released from the Stones’ camp.
HENDRIX’S “VOODOO CHILD” IS THE GREATEST RIFF
In a new poll, Jimi Hendrix’s “Voodoo Child” has been named the Greatest Riff of All Time. MusicRadar.com conducted a survey of five-thousand music lovers and Jimi’s 1968 classic got the most votes. Guns N’ Roses’ “Sweet Child O’ Mine” was second followed by “Whole Lotta Love” by Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple’s “Smoke on the Water,” “Layla” by Derek and the Dominos and AC/DC’s “Back in Black.” Tunes by Metallica, The Beatles, Nirvana and The Rolling Stones filled out the top ten. See the entire list at MusicRadar.com.
Paul McCartney Admits To Mills Mistake

Sir Paul McCartney admits that his follow-up wife Heather Mills was a big mistake.

McCartney’s marriage to Heather Mills is his biggest regret of the last ten years, he says.

The Beatles star - who has a six-year-old daughter Beatrice with the former model-and-charity-campaigner – admits if he could go back and change anything since 2000 it would be his union to Heather.

He said in an interview with Q magazine: 'I suppose the marriage has to be a prime contender for mistake of the decade. But I don’t want to down anyone.

'These things happen you know? But I tend to look at the positive side, which is that I have another beautiful daughter out of it.'

Despite the acrimonious divorce, Paul insists he has had a good time for most of the last ten years.

He said: 'I’ve managed to feel quite fulfilled this decade. If I hadn’t done my side project The Fireman I think I would wish I’d done that because it freshened ideas up for me.'

Paul, 67, also quashed rumours he would be retiring soon.

He revealed: 'I have too much fun. Why would I retire? Sit at home and watch TV? No thanks. I’d rather be out playing.'

Paul and Heather married in 2002 and divorced in 2008. The 'Yesterday’ singer had to pay his former spouse a £16.8 million settlement.

Eric Clapton tour announces U.S. concerts with Roger Daltrey

By Allison Reitz

North American audiences will get an extra dose of guitar master Eric Clapton in the New Year. Slowhand will be hitting the national tour circuit on an 11-date run that launches February 25 at Mellon arena in Pittsburgh, PA. The two-week itinerary is booked primarily for the East Coast and Midwest, ending with a March 13 show at Amway Arena in Orlando, FL. The Who's lead singer Roger Daltrey will also be along for the ride as a special guest, opening each night's performance.
EXPERIENCE HENDRIX TOUR LAUNCHES IN MARCH
JIMI'S MUSIC PERFORMED IN CONCERT BY ALL-STAR LINE-UP

Experience Hendrix, the fourth edition of the biennial concert tour that features an all-star line up of music greats paying homage to the music and legacy of Jimi Hendrix gets underway in early March of next year with special performances across the country.

Featured artists who will be performing music written and inspired by Jimi Hendrix include some of the best known and most respected artists in contemporary rock and blues including Joe Satriani, Jonny Lang, Eric Johnson, Kenny Wayne Shepherd, Brad Whitford (of Aerosmith), Doyle Bramhall II, Ernie Isley, Living Colour, Double Trouble’s Chris Layton, along with bassist Billy Cox. Cox, who first befriended Hendrix when the two were in the 101st Airborne Division of U.S. Army, played in both the Jimi Hendrix Experience and Band of Gypsys and performed with Hendrix at such landmark festivals as Woodstock and the Isle of Wight. Cox commented, "It's a thrill for me to play Jimi's music for audiences now as it was in the 1960s. The Experience Hendrix tours have shown how timeless this music really is." Joe Satriani remarked, "I finally get to pay tribute to my hero the right way, on stage with an amazing, once in a lifetime, line up of musicians!" Sacred Steel featuring Robert Randolph, Susan Tedeschi and David Hidalgo and Cesar Rosas of Los Lobos are also performing on selected Experience Tour dates.

Various combinations of these music greats will be performing Jimi’s signature songs including “Purple Haze,” “Voodoo Child (Slight Return), “The Wind Cries Mary,” “Little Wing” and “Red House.” As has been the case with previous Experience Hendrix tour incarnations, special guests are expected to sit in at many of the dates making the concerts all that much more memorable for both new and veteran Hendrix fans. Past special guests have included Paul Rodgers, Buddy Guy and Carlos Santana.

Kenny Wayne Shepherd, a veteran of several Experience Hendrix tours remarked, “Jimi Hendrix’s music has really inspired to push the limits of my own music. He didn’t observe any boundaries musically. He was an amazing player and a tremendous showman so I incorporated some of his showmanship in what I do.” As far as having been part of the Experience Hendrix touring phenomenon, Shepherd noted, “It touches you on the inside and gets you fired up.”

The Experience Hendrix Tour is presented by Experience Hendrix, LLC, the Hendrix family-owned company founded by James A. “Al” Hendrix, Jimi’s father, entrusted with preserving and protecting the legacy of Jimi Hendrix. Earlier this year, Sony Music Entertainment’s Legacy Division and Experience Hendrix entered into a worldwide catalog licensing venture to make all of Jimi’s extraordinary music, including classic albums, never before heard archive recordings, and filmed concerts available through all forms of media.

Launching on the west coast, the month-long tour will bring the troupe of players, each a headliner in his or her own right, to concert venues in major U.S. markets including Los Angeles, San Francisco, Denver, Minneapolis, Chicago, St. Louis and Atlanta.

Notes Experience Hendrix Tour producer John McDermott, “The line-up for this tour reflects the breadth of Jimi’s ongoing influence that reaches down through the generations. The guests that have been attracted to participate are enthusiastic about the proposition of performing with their counterparts. That mindset underscores the fact that the Experience Hendrix tour is all about musical camaraderie and the recognition that Jimi Hendrix, undeniably, casts the longest shadow in the realm of great music and great musicians.“

Janie Hendrix, CEO of Experience Hendrix noted, "Everyday, we see how Jimi's musical legacy continues to transcend generational and cultural boundaries. This tour is our way to give a live concert experience that reflects the genius of his unifying spirit. Part of our mission is to share Jimi’s music with audiences of all ages and these tours continue to play a key role in fulfilling that vision. As my brother said, “We want our sound to go into the soul of the audience, and see if it can awaken some little thing in their minds.. ’cause there are so many sleeping people…”

'The Last Waltz- (DVD) Re-Viewed' - a mini-Randt by Rand Crook
Dear Dad

I am compelled to write in response to my latest viewing of the DVD of Martin Scorsese's 'The Last Waltz,' certainly one of rock-n-roll's finest documents of perhaps its most mysteriously brilliant and uniquely American band's final concert. (however Canadian) Thank you Dad for reviving my interest in doing so.
I love DVD's because of their added value. You have the narrative experience of the film itself and then the extra bonus goodies like audio tracks and "making of" films and retrospectives. This DVD is chock full of these and what a pleasure. Robbie Robertson's and the director's comments were so full of contextual shading and backstory. Great for filmmakers like myself who are always looking for clues and insight into the creative process.
Scorsese comes across like a groupie/nerd who desperately wanted to be a rock star but became a director with heavy musical sensibilities insteaad. I empathize. He is a history buff with great technical and considerable human communication skills and affability. I too refer to myself as a frustrated musician come filmmaker. Cinema production employs all the arts.
It is befitting that The Band gave to Scorsese a Fender Stratocaster for his very own at the conclusion of the film. Making this film he was able to "jam" with the musicians with his extensive and elaborate set-ups, fancy lighting schematics, Hollywood designers and various top-shelf cinematographers. The names of the cameramen were like a who's-who of the industry; Kovac, Narita, Zigmond and Chapman, to name a few. Oh and it helped greatly to have such a luminous array of musicians as subjects to photograph. They were all colorful and dynamic performers all chosen very specifically for the occasion. Dylan, Van Morrison, Neil Young, Joni Mitchell, Muddy Waters, Neil Diamond, The Staple Singers and all of them brought something special to the one-time event. Other
oddities like poets Michael McClure and Lawrence Ferlinghetti rounded the show out. It was a smorgasbord of rock and roll culture for sure.
And Thanksgiving dinner for 4,000 hippies prior to the show, complete with orchestra for dining and dancing? Chandeliers hanging elegantly in the ceiling of the Winterland arena casting glowing lights on the fortunate below. That's not how I remember the old skating rink where as a sixteen year old a year later I rocked out to the Grateful Dead. It was pretty funky, but intimate. Enchanting.
What struck me the most was the profundity of the performances of Rick Danko, the second guitar player next to Robertson, and Levon Helm, of The Band. Richard Manuel's awesomely nuanced vocals were often not filmed according to complaints about the film from Helms, who insisted later that Roberton's production tended to favor himself and present the rest of the Band members as simply his back-up musicians. But such raw tenderness was best exhibited when Danko sang in that whiny falsetto "the gambler says read em and weep..And the sun..don't shine ...any more... and the rain falls down ..on my door!" Or when Helms sang his ass off while smacking the drums on the opening song of the film (and the last song of the show) "My biggest mistake was loving you TOO Much! I Tried to do my best...Please don't do it, don't ya break my heart!" You can feel an authenticity of emotion, a vulnerability, that cuts right through. Even Eric Clapton confessed that when
he first heard The Band play he instantly wanted no more of his music in his band Cream, feeling suddenly that Cream's music "just wasn't him."
All those guys in the band were great singers with great songs. But when it was time for classics such as 'The Night They Drove Ole Dixie Down' something greater happened. It is a narative beyond the normal scope of emotion, beyond your basic themes of lost love and betrayal: it is a song of wrenching historical pain from wounds still not completely scabbed and fallen away, not yet sompletely healed maybe. You can feel that railroad track being tore up again by the Union Army or the worthlessness of the confederate money, the dispeair of a culture turned upside-down and inside out by WAR. You can almost smell the dried blood below the feet of Virgil Cain. Defeat is not glamorous or spandex rock-n-roll. Damned great band, The Band was.
'The Weight' and 'I Shall Be Released' ooze with grief from some other time and place, some forgotten battlefield where a mother cried for a week for her lost teenage son. You can hear it. How do they sing sad songs without welling up and gushing with tears? Its a special gift to sing the songs of pain, to recite the words of loss.
The darkly lit interviews were shot at George Lucas' place at night because he was shooting 'Star Wars' during the day. Levon Helms sheds interesting light on the genesis of modern rock music from traveling shows. His timeless, tobacco chewing, backwoods image is set against his keen elloquence to an almost eery effect.
The 35mm film resolution is solid and phat, in a word or two.
The director explored his subject affectionately, curiously. He asked questions like a child almost. For all his cleverness he cannot crack the code of the rock-n-roll musician, so he compromises- with cameras.
The subtle light changes were all cued in advance, but one would never have known without the extra audio track of the dvd to explain. On this line of that song a certain lighting look occurred. The low lighting angle was like the old Hollywood films of the thirties. The constant movement of the camera into Emmy Lou Harris' face on 'Evangeline' as if she were the subject of the song itself. And such an angelic voice has she. The push into the antique abalone inlaid accordian squeezed so beautifully by Garth Hudson, who made the rest of the band pay him for lessons in order to agree to join them. The wooden instruments were shrouded in foggy timelessness.
Neil Young fit right in with 'Helpless' while Joni Mitchell's 'Coyote' 'You just picked up a hitcher..prisoner of the white lines of the freeway.." was nothing short of absolute musical genious. Dylan almost fades into the background of my memory with the newness with which the others astonished me. Dylan too saw The Band as something mighty special but didn't want to be filmed too much in order not to compete with his own movie 'Renaldo and Clara' coming out at the time.
It has taken years for me to grasp the immensity of the music of The Band, and surely the attempt is not over. Griel Marcus wrote an entire book, which I loved, about the making of their 'The Basement Tapes' lp. They were an enigmatic force of culture beyond trend and fashion.
"See that man with the stage fright ..just standing up there giving it all his might. He got caught in a spotlight..and when he gets to the end.."
Rick Danko sang from the depths of his own huge soul. Prophetic, deeply touching sound. How old are these guys, anyhow? It seems, very old indeed. Wise.
The hours of the show went on and on. The long jam with Ringo's clunky beat went on and on. Clapton broke a string but recovered before it was over.
Muddy Waters brought weight to the show that no other could. His inflections on 'Mannish Boy' 'I'm a Maaaaaaan' just brought down the house. "Full grown lovers man." On the other hand, I didn't care so much for Ronnie Hawkins, who belted out 'Who Do You Love?' But with Muddy Waters there, what was he thinkin? Clapton played Bobby Bland's 'Further on up the Road' and Dr. John tinkled the keys with his New Orleans honky-tonk sound dressed in a pink ruffled shirt, mojo necklaces and a great hat.
I recall Ferlinghetti doing his twisted version of The Lord's Prayer called 'The Loud Prayer' for our camera in 1989 for a German TV show special, just like at The Last Waltz. Radical, in your face stuff, in the San Francisco tradition. He was proud of that. He is a UNC Tarheel alumn too, for what its worth. Michael McClure freaked everyone out with his old english verses from Chaucer's Canterbury Tales. Gibberish basically.
He was also the subject of another German TV piece I shot at his house in Oakland in which he performed his poem with the line 'Oh Lord Won't You Buy Me a Mercedes Benz' made famous in song by Janis Joplin. The audience at the Winterland must've been dumbfounded with the poetry and wordplay.
The message was clear though. The road is no way to live, for them anyway. So, why not go out with style? Look at Janis and Jimi and Hank Williams and on and on. Robbie Robertson said very adroitly regarding the ultimate value of The Band's Last Waltz...to paraphrase..
"To close one thing in order to open another!"
I like that.
Thanks again, Dad. Please pardon the formality.
love,

Links By George December 2nd

Greetings again. The blog update took awhile to update,
but I hope the new art and news paste ups will have some
interest for everyone. Some people have been asking
about my radio show presentation on Wed. nights (Sydney time)
for which I am adding the information below as well.
A fine week to you.
George

Recently, I have started being a musical presenter on our local
community radio station NIM-FM 102.3 here in Nimbin.
My show is called "Sidetracks" which is an eclectic blend of 60's
psychedelia, progressive rock, blues, shamanic/political overtones
and fun to listen to. I am on the air on Wednesday from 8-10:30 p.m
local time. The station streams on the internet, and you are invited
to check the show out. Make sure you go to the world time site to
find out the appropriate day or hour from your region. Australia
has various time zones and ours is the same as Sydney or Melbourne.
If you do tune in, I would be happy to hear your feedback. A sampling
of artists on the show includes a range from AC/DC, Stones, Zeppelin,
Tim Buckley, Dylan, Traffic, Miles Davis, Grateful Dead, Zappa
and lots of nuggets in between for a very high soundscape.
Here is the link to the stream:

All Politicians Are Alike
An Open Letter to President Obama from Michael Moore
By Michael Moore
Do you really want to be the new "war president"? If you go to
West Point tomorrow night (Tuesday, 8pm) and announce that you
are increasing, rather than withdrawing, the troops in Afghanistan,
you are the new war president. Pure and simple.

Civil War Spreads Across North West Pakistan
By James Cogan
The escalating violence, taking place on the dictates of Washington,
can only have the most explosive political consequences. Barely 14 months
after taking over the presidency, Zardari has plunged the country into a
worsening civil war that has devastated the north west and is costing as
much as $10 billion a year.

Blackwater's Secret War in Pakistan
By Jeremy Scahill
At a covert forward operating base run by the US Joint Special
Operations Command (JSOC) in the Pakistani port city of Karachi,
members of an elite division of Blackwater are at the center of a
secret program in which they plan targeted assassinations of suspected
Taliban and Al Qaeda operatives, "snatch and grabs" of high-value
targets and other sensitive action inside and outside Pakistan,
an investigation by The Nation has found.

Why They Hate Us :On Military Occupation
By Stephen M. Walt
The bottom line is that you don't need to be a sociologist, political
scientist, or a student of colonialism or foreign cultures to understand
why military occupation is such a poisonous activity and why it usually
fails. If you're an American, you just need to read a bit about
Reconstruction and reflect on how its effects -- along with the
effects of slavery itself -- have persisted across generations.

President Sarah Palin
By Margaret Kimberley
Smug Democrats love to imagine they are a species apart from
Sarah Palin, the "pit bull with lipstick." However, U.S. political
history teaches us never to overestimate the intelligence of the
American electorate, or trust a Democrat - many of whom were
Republicans not very long ago. At root, Palin's supporters are
"white nationalists," the same people that adored Ronald Reagan
and, yes, George Bush. So why is it so hard to imagine a Palin presidency?
