Links By George September 23, 2010

Aloha from The Big Island of Hawaii. It has been a fine week of thermal springs,
swimming with giant turtles and finding a $500 car that seems to work.
There have been many photos uploaded into my flicker account for you to check out of our travels as well as some vintage ones such as one dear one with Terence McKenna taken about 20 years ago.

To open links below, the best way is to use the rollerball on your mouse and push it down over the link and it will open in a new window instead of hitting the back button each time...

Monsanto hired mercenary Blackwater to infiltrate anti-GMO groups
By Stephanie Dearing

(The article below has been mentioned by some friends as a hoax. I hope so)
on June 10th, 2010, Obama signed Executive Order #13544 which mandates
that the US is adopting Codex Alimentarius. This legislation, *originating
from the United Nations*, in effect, begins a worldwide campaign for
massive hunger and starvation.
Now, with a stroke of a pen, and quietly behind the scenes when everyone
was focused on the Gulf Oil Spill, he effectively launched Codex Alimentarius
in the US, which is intended to bring ALL vitamin and mineral supplements and
natural health remedies and technologies to an end. The CDC and the HHS
*can now make illegal*, all alternative health remedies and technologies.
This bill renders all alternative health remedies "unscientific" and not
provable by the FDA. This legislation is a huge step in population control,
giving the pharmaceuticals full control over the health of all individuals,
which is what the global socialists have wanted for years.

QUOTES FOR THE WEEK:

"Today the tyrant rules not by club or fist, but, disguised as a market researcher, he shepherds his flocks in the ways of utility and comfort." : Marshall McLuhan - (1911-1980)
=
"...free enterprise, [is] a term that refers, in practice, to a system of public subsidy and private profit, with massive government intervention in the economy to maintain a welfare state for the rich." : Noam Chomsky
"Now my friends, I am opposed to the system of society in which we live today, not because I lack the natural equipment to do for myself but because I am not satisfied to make myself comfortable knowing that there are thousands of my fellow men who suffer for the barest necessities of life.
We were taught under the old ethic that man's business on this earth was to look out for himself. That was the ethic of the jungle; the ethic of the wild beast. Take care of yourself, no matter what may become of your fellow man. Thousands of years ago the question was asked; ''Am I my brother's keeper?'' That question has never yet been answered in a way that is satisfactory to civilized society.
Yes, I am my brother's keeper. I am under a moral obligation to him that is inspired, not by any maudlin sentimentality but by the higher duty I owe myself. What would you think me if I were capable of seating myself at a table and gorging myself with food and saw about me the children of my fellow beings starving to death": Eugene V. Debs: 1908 speech
=
"[I]n such a world of conflict, a world of victims and executioners, it is the job of thinking people, not to be on the side of the executioners." Albert Camus:

... the 20th century has been characterized by three developments of great political importance: The growth of democracy, the growth of corporate power, and the growth of corporate propaganda as a means of protecting corporate power against democracy. Alex Carey:
"Many that live deserve death. And some die that deserve life. Can you give it to them? Then be not too eager to deal out death in the name of justice, fearing for your own safety. Even the wise cannot see all ends. "-- J.R.R. Tolkien

"I think the subject which will be of most importance politically is Mass Psychology. ...It's importance has been enormously Increased by the growth of modern methods of propaganda ... Although this science will be diligently studied, it will be rigidly confined to the governing class. The populace will not be allowed to know how its convictions were generated.": Bertrand Russell (1872-1970) Philosopher, educator

"The most absolute authority is that which penetrates into a man's innermost being and concerns itself no less with his will than with his actions.": Jean-Jacques Rousseau (1712-1778) Political philosopher, educationist and essayist Source: The Social Contract, 1762
The age of warrior kings and of warrior presidents has passed. The nuclear age calls for a different kind of leadership....a leadership of intellect, judgment, tolerance and rationality, a leadership committed to human values, to world peace, and to the improvement of the human condition. The attributes upon which we must draw are the human attributes of compassion and common sense, of intellect and creative imagination, and of empathy and understanding between cultures.": William Fulbright
Each of the Iraqi children killed by the United States was our child. Each of the prisoners tortured in Abu Ghraib was our comrade. Each of their screams was ours. When they were humiliated, we were humiliated. The U.S. soldiers fighting in Iraq - mostly volunteers in a poverty draft from small towns and poor urban neighborhoods - are victims just as much as the Iraqis of the same horrendous process, which asks them to die for a victory that will never be theirs: Arundhati Roy

=
Anyone who has proclaimed violence his method inexorably must choose lying as his principle: Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn
=
"When shall it be said in any country of the world, my poor are happy, neither ignorance or distress is to be found among them; my jails are empty of prisoners, my streets of beggars; the aged are not in want, the taxes not oppressive; the rational world is my friend because I am friend of its happiness. When these things can be said, then may that country boast of its constitution and government ." - Thomas Paine

The corporate grip on opinion in the United States is one of the wonders of the Western world. No First World country has ever managed to eliminate so entirely from its media all objectivity - much less dissent: Gore Vidal
=
Resistance is feasible even for those who are not heroes by nature, and it is an obligation, I believe, for those who fear the consequences and detest the reality of the attempt to impose American hegemony.: Noam Chomsky
"It is part of the general pattern of misguided policy that our country is now geared to an arms economy which was bred in an artificually induced psychosis of war hysteria and nurtured upon an incessant propaganda of fear." : General Douglas MacArthur, Speech, May 15, 1951
=
".....if by a liberal they mean someone who looks ahead and not behind, someone who welcomes new ideas without rigid reactions, someone who cares about the welfare of the people- their health, their housing, their schools, their jobs, their civil rights, their civil liberties.. if that is what they mean by a "liberal" then I am proud to be a liberal. The iPhone and iPad app will be an interactive album cover, although the singer negated the futuristic method of record release by adding “forgive my use of the word “album”. I am old school.”
The album was produced by Daniel Lanois (U2, Coldplay).
Track List:

Love And War

Bob Dylan will release the 9th edition of his bootleg series in October.
‘The Bootleg Series Volume 9 – The Witmark Demos’ features the first official release of 47 Dylan tracks recorded as demos for this first music publisher Leeds Music in 1962 and for his second M. Witmark & Sons between 1962 and 1964.
The collection features early versions of now classics ‘Mr Tambourine Man’, ‘Blowin In The Wind’ and ‘The Times They Are A-Changing’, all recorded before Dylan turned 24 years old.
15 of the songs were recorded for the demos but never made their way to Dylan albums.
As well as ‘The Witmark Demos’, Sony will also reissue Dylan’s first eight albums in their original mono mixes as a box set. The eight albums start with the March 1962 debut self-titled album and go through to 1967’s ‘John Wesley Harding’ record. Former Led Zeppelin front man Robert Plant has said that he feels disconnected from heavy rock after a Them Crooked Vultures show.
Speaking to The Independent, Plant said his ears “bled for two days” after watching his former bandmate John Paul Jones’ new band Them Crooked Vultures at the Royal Albert Hall.
“I feel so far away from heavy rock now,” he explained. “It's quite odd, how mine and John's paths seem to have crossed over – we've sort of gone into each others' worlds a bit."
Plant achieved critical acclaim and won the Album of the Year Grammy for his 2007 album ‘Raising Sand’ with country singer Alison Krauss. Plant turned down offers of reuniting Led Zeppelin for a full tour, preferring instead to tour in support of this album.
His next album ‘Band Of Joy’ will be in Australian stores on September 10.
LEARN ABOUT HENDRIX IN LONDON
Fans of Jimi Hendrix will want to get to England soon. That’s because to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the rocker’s death, Jimi’s former residence in London has opened to the public. In addition, an exhibition at London’s Handel House Museum is also open. The exhibit boasts some of the guitarist’s personal possessions including handwritten lyrics, sketches and other memorabilia. HandelHouse.org has all the info.
John Lennon 70th tribute concert to be held in NY
NEW YORK (Reuters) – Celebrations to mark the 70th anniversary of John Lennon's birth will include a benefit concert in New York, organizers said on Tuesday.
Among the musicians slated to pay tribute to the former Beatle at the November 12 concert at New York's Beacon Theater are Jackson Browne, Patti Smith, Cyndi Lauper, Aimee Mann and Shelby Lynne.
The concert is one of several events and parties being held in New York and around the world to honor what would have been Lennon's 70th birthday on October 9.
Lennon's widow, Yoko Ono, is expected to mark the anniversary day in Iceland, where she will light the Imagine Peace Tower memorial located on the island of Vioey, near the Reykjavik.
Ono's "We Are Plastic Ono Band" has also planned tribute shows expected to feature guests Lady Gaga and Iggy Pop in Los Angeles on October 1 and 2, while on October 5 she will help release eight reissued solo albums plus new collections called the "John Lennon Signature Box."
This year Lennon has been depicted in the biopic "Nowhere Boy," by video artist Sam Taylor-Wood and is the subject of a new documentary "LennonNYC" using rarely seen footage of the music legend. He was gunned down outside his New York City apartment on December 8th, 1980.
Proceeds from the concert will be donated to the Playing for Change Foundation, a charity which promotes peace through music and builds music schools in the developing world.

Buffalo Springfield, featuring surviving members Neil Young, Stephen Stills, Richie Furay and Jim Messina, will perform together for the first time in 40 years in October.
The iconic band that launched the career of Neil Young will perform for Neil’s charity function, The Bridge School Benefit on October 23 and 24 at The Shoreline Amphitheatre in Mountain View, outside San Francisco.
Bruce Palmer died in 2004. Dewey Martin died in 2009.
Buffalo Springfield were together between 1966 and 1968. They recorded three albums, ‘Buffalo Springfield’ (1966), ‘Buffalo Springfield Again’ (1967) and ‘Last Time Around’ (1968).
In 2000, Young hinted at a reunion on his ‘Silver and Gold’ album with the track ‘Buffalo Springfield Again’. The lyrics went “see those guys again and give it a shot”.
Neil Young’s Bridge School Concert this year will also feature performances from Elton John and Leon Russell, Elvis Costello, Jackson Browne, Modest Mouse and Pearl Jam.
This will be the 24th annual Bridge School Concert. Neil and Pegi Young have down the event for the last 24 years to benefit Hillborough’s Bridge School, aiding students with severe learning disabilities.
Jimi Hendrix's Transformation
From R&B Sideman To World's Most Electrifying Guitarist
Across 4 Hours of Rare & Unreleased Tracks On 5 Disc (4 CD/1 DVD) Boxed Set
Legacy Recordings and Experience Hendrix LLC are proud to announce the highly-anticipated release of West Coast Seattle Boy - The Jimi Hendrix Anthology, featuring more than four hours of rare and previously unreleased Jimi Hendrix music on a 5 Disc (4 CD/1 DVD) deluxe box set, available Tuesday, November 16.
The long-awaited career-spanning box set tracks Hendrix's remarkable journey from little known R&B sideman to international stardom through an unprecedented assemblage of previously unavailable recordings. West Coast Seattle Boy - The Jimi Hendrix Anthology is not a collection of existing Jimi Hendrix albums but instead 45 unreleased Jimi Hendrix live and studio recordings including demos and alternate versions of songs from Are You Experienced, Axis: Bold As Love, and Electric Ladyland. West Coast Seattle Boy includes Hendrix’s never before heard version of Bob Dylan’s 'Tears Of Rage," solo acoustic recordings of Electric Ladyland favorites like "Long Hot Summer Night" and "1983 (A Merman I Shall Turn To Be)" as well as never before heard live performances from Berkeley and the legendary Band Of Gypsys Fillmore East concert on New Year's Eve 1969 combined together with such new Hendrix songs as "Hear My Freedom," "Hound Dog Blues," "Lonely Avenue" and more.
A centerpiece achievement in Legacy Recordings' monumental Jimi Hendrix catalog project, West Coast Seattle Boy - The Jimi Hendrix Anthology is the first Hendrix collection to bring fans access to a comprehensive treasure trove of fresh material -- including demos, alternate takes, live concert jewels and more -- from all phases of the artist's recording career (1964 -1970).
West Coast Seattle Boy - The Jimi Hendrix Anthology offers the most complete collection of Jimi's pre-Experience R&B performances (including his singles with the Isley Brothers, Little Richard, Don Covay, King Curtis and more) to ever be officially anthologized, while bringing together the most comprehensive and revelatory set of fully realized songs, never before heard live performances, alternate studio takes, acoustic and electric demos, and other rarities drawn from every chapter of Jimi Hendrix's remarkable life and career.
The newly curated and assembled West Coast Seattle Boy - The Jimi Hendrix Anthology includes Jimi Hendrix Voodoo Child, a new 90 minute documentary directed by the multiple Grammy award winning Bob Smeaton (Beatles Anthology, Festival Express, Beatles: The Studio Recordings, Band of Gypsys). An autobiographical journey told in the legendary musician's own words as read by Parliament-Funkadelic's Bootsy Collins, the film incorporates interviews with Hendrix, coupled with the artist's letters, writings and recordings to provide new insight into one of the most enduring icons of popular culture. The documentary features some of Jimi's greatest performances as well as rare and never before seen footage and photos including--for the first time ever--examples from the Hendrix family archive of the late guitarist’s personal drawings, postcards home to his father, song drafts, sketches, and lyrics.
"Who better to tell the incredible story of a man's life than the man himself? Jimi was amazing and only his music, with tones and textures that he conjured, can capture the colorful and expansive essence of his time here on earth. I am enthralled with this all-encompassing new anthology which not only illuminates his years on both sides of the Atlantic and beautifully reveals his versatility as a performer, from his R&B origins to his explosion on the pop culture scene, but highlights who he was for those who knew and loved him," said Janie Hendrix, President and CEO of Experience Hendrix and co-producer of West Coast Seattle Boy - The Jimi Hendrix Anthology. "This vast exploration of my brother's musical and life experiences leaves no stone unturned and is sure to broaden our understanding of who Jimi really was, not only as a legendary musician, but also as a timeless messenger of love."
"Jimi Hendrix changed the world with his music and West Coast Seattle Boy - The Jimi Hendrix Anthology honors that achievement with an unprecedented collection of rarities and never-before-heard tracks from the Hendrix vaults that show the breadth and depth of this extraordinary artist," said Adam Block, Executive Vice President and General Manager, Legacy Recordings. "West Coast Seattle Boy - The Jimi Hendrix Anthology is a comprehensive overview of Hendrix's career told through fresh materials and provides remarkable new insights into one of music's greatest geniuses."
An essential and historic addition to the Jimi Hendrix catalog, West Coast Seattle Boy - The Jimi Hendrix Anthology brings together, for the first time, many of Hendrix's earliest commercial recordings, providing a rare glimpse of the rising rock guitar hero through a series of stellar sideman performances on a set of highly collectible pre-Experience R&B singles. PLANT’S BAND OF JOY TO WORK ON NEW MUSIC
This week, Robert Plant and his Band of Joy released an album of cover songs and now, the Led Zeppelin singer says the group will work on some original music. The rocker told Billboard.com that he hasn’t “got a great deal of self-esteem when it comes to writing” but the Band of Joy is “heading that way soon.” Plant added that it will mark the first time he’s written a song “with the Americana psyche in full flight.”

Unreleased Ray Charles Recordings Are Focus Of Rare Genius: The Undiscovered Masters
Oct. 26 Concord Records Release
Features Surprise Duet With Johnny Cash
LOS ANGELES, Calif. —Concord Records is celebrating the 80th birthday of the legendary Ray Charles with a special gift for his legions of fans: Rare Genius: The Undiscovered Masters. This treasure trove of newly discovered recordings, highlighted by a duet with fellow icon Johnny Cash, will become available at physical and digital retailers October 26, 2010.
Culled from four decades worth of demos and other previously unreleased material, Rare Genius showcases the remarkable artistic vision, stylistic range and emotionally rich vocals that crafted Charles enduring legacy.
Listening to the ten gems from the '70s, '80s and '90s that comprise this CD, fans will have no trouble envisioning the late singer rocking back and forth at the piano as he effortlessly segues between R&B/soul, pop, country and gospel. “Ray would always get inside the meaning of a lyric and make the listener believe every word,” says Concord Music Group Chief Creative Officer. John Burk. “His vocals carried incredible emotion and intensity, even on demo tapes. What we have here with Rare Genius is on par with some of his greatest works.”
And that’s crystal clear right from the album’s sparkling opener, "Love’s Gonna Bite You Back." The March 1980 session track features an upbeat horn arrangement behind what Rare Genius liner notes author Bill Dahl calls “a Charles vocal that’s a signature mixture of sandpaper grit and heavenly goodness.” Up next is the stunning ballad "It Hurts to Be in Love," which underscores the album’s main thematic focus and one of Charles’ favorite subjects: the ups and down of romance.
Another compelling standout is the gospel-stirred Charles and Cash duet on Kris Kristofferson’s "Why Me, Lord?" Discovered in the Sony vaults, the song was produced by Billy Sherrill in Nashville and recorded in 1981 for an anticipated release on a CBS album. For unknown reasons, that didn’t come to pass. What’s more important, however, is the emotional charge you get listening to these two powerful voices come together in this spirited and inspired pairing.
Except for "Lord," the nine other Rare Genius tracks including the soul-drenched "I Don’t Want No One But You," a blues-infused cover of songwriter Hank Cochran’s country classic "A Little Bitty Tear" and the joyous "I’m Gonna Keep on Singin'" were found in the vault at Charles’ R.P.M. International studios in Los Angeles. Adding a little sweetening to some of the sparse, stripped-down tracks was a team of top-notch musicians and artists: guitarists Keb' Mo' and George Doering, organist Bobby Sparks, trumpeter Gray Grant, trombonist Alan Kaplan, bassists Trey Henry and Chuck Berghofer, drummers Gregg Field and Ray Brinker and background vocalist Eric Benet.
As with its Concord predecessor, 2004’s Grammy-winning Album of the Year Genius Loves Company, Rare Genius: The Undiscovered Masters is another fitting tribute to Charles, who would have turned 80 on September 23. It’s a fresh, vibrant reaffirmation of the music icon’s unparalleled artistry and legacy

BALTIMORE – Rocker Frank Zappa was born in Baltimore but gained greater popular acclaim in Europe than in the United States. On Sunday, devout European fans of the late musician brought his mustachioed likeness back home in the form of a bronze bust.
Several hundred fans gathered on a sweltering afternoon as city officials dedicated the bust of the ponytailed rocker outside an east Baltimore library. The bust is a replica of another in a public square in Vilnius, Lithuania, and was donated to the city by Zappa enthusiasts in the small Baltic nation.
"The spirit of Frank Zappa is alive and well in Baltimore," Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake said.
The mayor joined Zappa's widow, Gail, and three of his grown children in watching as a curtain was drawn back to reveal the bust set atop a 12-foot steel pole. Later, Zappa's son, Dweezil, took the stage with his tribute band, Zappa Plays Zappa.
Zappa was known for everything from novelty rock songs to elaborate classical compositions. He died of prostate cancer in 1993 at 52.
Sunday's ceremony marked the 25th anniversary of Zappa's testimony before Congress on freedom of expression for recording artists, though the scheduling was coincidental. Zappa had testified against proposed warning labels about lyrical content, calling them a path to censorship.
Libraries were a vital resource for Zappa, who had no formal music education, Gail Zappa told The Associated Press in a recent interview.
Zappa would have appreciated the bizarre way he came to be honored in his birthplace, his widow said. Zappa's songs were known for their quirky, humorous lyrics: One of his biggest hits was "Don't Eat the Yellow Snow." Yet his music was also a favorite of the avant-garde.
"He'd be wildly amused by this, because of the absurdity of these guys in Lithuania coming up with this phenomenal sculptor who normally does busts of Stalin," Gail Zappa said.
Zappa's daughter, Diva, choked up while addressing a throng that chanted Zappa's name.
"Thank you so much for just loving my dad," she said.
Also at the ceremony were the mayor of Vilnius and Saulius Paukstys, the longtime president of a Lithuanian Zappa fan club who commissioned the original statue.
He has described the effort to erect the bust in Vilnius in the early 1990s as a test of the former Soviet republic's fledgling independence. The Baltimore dedication, he said, was a great day "for art, the human mind and democracy."
Helen Urban, 61, of Silver Spring, was among the Zappa fans in the crowd and saw the original bust during a trip to Lithuania last year. The replica is in a better location, Urban said.
"They have it sitting in the parking lot of a hospital," she said. "It's ugly as sin, but it's cool."
Gail Zappa, on the other hand, finds it beautiful.
"The guy was inspired," she said of sculptor Konstantinas Bogdanas. "It's more than a likeness. It captured the force of his personality and his will in terms of being an artist."
