The dazzling range of music originally issued by Apple Records between 1968 and 1973, which is now the subject of an unprecedented multi-album worldwide campaign starting October 25th – including remastered CDs (with bonus material revealed for the first time below) and Apple’s first digital downloads – will now be augmented by two additional titles: ‘Come and Get It: The Best Of Apple Records,’ the first commercially issued multi-artist compilation in the label’s history; and ‘The Radha Krishna Temple,’ the self-titled album of devotional music produced by George Harrison.
‘Come and Get It: The Best Of Apple Records,’ a 21 track compilation of singles, ranging from the folk-rooted tunes of Mary Hopkin and James Taylor, and the energetic rock of Badfinger (also The Iveys) and Jackie Lomax, to the deep soul of Doris Troy and Billy Preston, will also be released in the physical and digital marketplace on October 25th 2010.
‘Come and Get It‘ displays Apple’s vibrant years of musical experimentation in full flower, from bona fide hit singles to the cult classics of the catalogue, as represented by brass band The Black Dyke Mills Band, Cajun collective The Sundown Playboys, and more. Hot Chocolate (as ‘The Hot Chocolate Band’) makes an appearance, as does Ronnie Spector, Bill Elliot & The Elastic Oz Band, Chris Hodge, Brute Force, and others.
Launched by The Beatles in 1968, Apple served as the new outlet for their own recordings as well as the music of an eclectic roster of artists who were all personally brought to the label by The Beatles (individually and/or collectively). In the revolutionary spirit of the times, Apple’s utopian artist-orientated mission celebrated diversity in a friendly creative environment. The result was a rainbow spectrum of music, from folk, rock and soul to The Modern Jazz Quartet and the work of contemporary British classical composer John Tavener.

In 1962, who could have imagined “Brian Wilson Reimagines Gershwin”?
The answer is any member of the Wilson family, who all grew up listening to George Gershwin, the composer of “Summertime” and so many other indelible American classics.
Wilson has claimed his first musical memory is “Rhapsody in Blue,” the opener of his new album, which arrives in stores Tuesday. Arranged by Wilson as an a cappella jaunt, it is a merry blend of Wilson’s patented harmonies and Gershwin’s landmark composition. This segues into a previously unfinished Gershwin tune, “The Like in I Love You,” which Wilson and his lyricist/drummer, Scott Bennett, completed. If it sounds like “Pet Sounds,” why shouldn’t it?
The standout feature is the excellence of Wilson’s vocals. During the last few years, his live singing has run the gamut from shaky to soaring. “Brian Wilson Reimagines Gershwin” proves he still has the abilities of his Beach Boys youth totally intact and he’s happy to share them.
Not that the arrangements are not also remarkable. They are sublime and reference both Gershwin and Wilson. As a result, these mostly oft-recorded tunes take on stunning new lives. Take “I Got Rhythm,” for instance. After a non-rhythmical intro a la Wilson’s take on “Rhapsody In Blue,” the drums and guitars echo the groove from the Beach Boys standard “Catch a Wave.” And it works. Who would have guessed?
An unusual choice is “I Loves You Porgy,” usually sung by the female African-American Bess character in Gershwin’s classic 1935 musical. Wilson introduces no gender changes. He sings his plaintive confession of love to a man. Not a chance of that happening in 1962! The times they have a-changed.
The instrumental version of “I Got Plenty o’ Nuttin’ ” that follows owes a nod to “Help Me, Rhonda,” no doubt the first time those two classics have been paired. And so it goes on for 13 terrific tracks (“Rhapsody” is reprised as the 14th). As a true Brian Wilson fan - my favorite album of all time is “Pet Sounds” - I am deliriously happy, but not surprised by this fortuitous collaboration. This is an album to enjoy and share with your friends as well as your parents, whether they grew up with Wilson or Gershwin.
The song choices are ’s wonderful and there is something for everyone - except maybe Sid Vicious (but he covered Paul Anka’s “My Way,” so perhaps he was on his way to Gershwin before he so awkwardly exited this planet).
Heavy credit must be given to all who participated: musicians, orchestrators, recording-mixing-and mastering engineers, singers, and Disney for bankrolling this project. I believe a parade of Grammys will follow if Jethro Tull doesn’t put out an album this year.
Seriously, this is nothing less than a timeless treasure. Don’t lose a moment in picking up these good Gershwin vibrations.

WHAT ELSE DOES DAVID CROSBY WANT TO DO?
David Crosby turns 69 years old. With nearly seven decades under his belt, the singer has accomplished a fair amount. But is there anything he hasn’t done but would still like to do? He filled us in.
(Cut #2) “Yeah, there are some things I’d really like to do. I would’ve liked to go a lot further as a pilot, probably get rated in a jet. I think that would’ve been great. I can’t really afford it. I had to sell the plane that I did have. I would love to sail around the world because I’ve been sailing now for 54 years and I love it dearly and that’s an adventure that I would love to go on with my son. There’s a lot of stuff to do. Lots of music still to make.”
BONHAM STILL GETS EMOTIONAL ABOUT HIS FATHER
Later this year, Jason Bonham will hit the road with a new production he’s created called the Led Zeppelin Experience. The son of late-Zep drummer John Bonham plans to commemorate the 30th anniversary of his father’s death by performing some of the band’s greatest hits, showing early footage of the group and telling stories about his dad. Jason explained to us why he’ll have to use voiceover for the anecdotes.
(Cut #1) “Each story, as I’ve repeated them or talked about them or tried to write them down, I get kind of caught in the moment and it’s been hard. So I know that one thing for sure, I will have to narrate the pieces I want and the stories I want cause I don’t think that I’ll be able to do it, even 30 years on, to get through it without an emotional night.”

DVDS TO SHOW BEATLES ON SULLIVAN
On February 9th, 1964, The Beatles took the stage on the Ed Sullivan Show and 76-million Americans tuned in. Now, almost 50 years later, the band’s legendary appearances on the program are coming out on DVD. On September 7th, the four complete Sullivan shows with the Fab Four will hit shelves as a DVD set. The 250-minute discs, aptly called The 4 Complete Ed Sullivan Shows Starring the Beatles, also boast 13 minutes of additional footage, including a previously unaired interview Sullivan did with the Beatles in London, a commercial for Beatles dolls by Sullivan and more.
HENDRIX’S ELECTRIC LADY STUDIOS’ 40TH ANNIVERSARY
On August 26th, 1970, Jimi Hendrix opened the Electric Lady Recording Studios in New York City’s Greenwich Village. To mark the studio’s 40th anniversary, the Audio Engineering Society of New York will hold a panel discussion that includes Jimi’s sister, Janie Hendrix, Jimi’s engineer, Eddie Kramer, as well as many other big names in engineering. Only 60 people can attend but CBS will stream the event on the AES’ website, AES.org/Sections/NY.

MORE RELEASES FROM THE HENDRIX ESTATE
Jimi Hendrix’s estate plans to release more reissues and rarities from the guitar legend. After a first round of releases earlier this year, in October, a second set of deluxe reissues will hit shelves. They include Jimi’s Woodstock performance, a collection of Hendrix’s U-K television and radio appearances, a blues collection, plus a new four-disc compilation called West Coast Seattle Boy, a career-spanning package with demos, alternate takes, previously unreleased recordings and a documentary. That’s just the tip of the iceberg of the releases too. They’re out on October 19th.
(SAN FRANCISCO) The Museum of Performance & Design’s (MPD) critically acclaimed exhibition Somethin’s Happening Here: Bay Area Rock ‘n’ Roll 1963-73 marks the end of its run with a very special program that focuses on the sounds of the era it celebrates. In a treat for casual fans and aficionados alike, the Museum hosts an evening of rare audio and video recorded during the 1960s in San Francisco. LOS ANGELES, Calif. — The argument rages on, but for many music fans in the ’60s, the best live band from the Bay Area was Jefferson Airplane. Formed during the summer of 1965 in San Francisco, the group triumphed in 1967 with Surrealistic Pillow, one of the key recordings of the Summer of Love, containing the hits “Somebody to Love,” “White Rabbit” and “Today.” The Airplane featured three master instrumentalists (Jorma Kaukonen, Jack Casady and Spencer Dryden) and three vocalists: Grace Slick (replacing original singer Signe Anderson in 1966), Marty Balin and Paul Kantner. The Rock ’n’ Roll Hall of Fame inductees made a total of eight studio albums and released a smattering of live albums including 1969’s Bless Its Pointed Little Head.
But what most fans don’t know is that there are vast reserves of never-released live material by Jefferson Airplane capturing key moments in their history. On October 26, 2010, Collectors’ Choice Music Live will release four previously unreleased live albums: Live at the Fillmore Auditorium 10/15/66 Late Show — Signe’s Farewell, Live at the Fillmore Auditorium 10/16/66 Early & Late Shows — Grace’s Debut, Live at the Fillmore Auditorium 11/25/66 & 11/27/66 — We Have Ignition, and Return to the Matrix 2/1/68.
The first three releases document the astonishing growth of the band, and follow the near-seamless absorption of Grace Slick’s voice and material into the Airplane’s sound just as they were entering the studio to record Surrealistic Pillow. The fourth release captures the group triumphantly returning to their home turf at Marty Balin’s club The Matrix for a relaxed, exploratory set in an intimate setting, performing material from their first four albums, including Crown of Creation, seven months before its release. Taken together, the four releases confirm that at its best, when Jorma was soaring, Jack rumbling and the three voices joining in ecstatic melisma, no other band could ascend to the heights attained by the Airplane. Hand-picked by a team of devotees, annotated by frequent Airplane flyer Craig Fenton (author of the book Take Me To A Circus Tent: The Jefferson Airplane Flight Manual), and featuring rare photos inside handsome digi-packs, these concerts distill and express the dream and promise of the Haight-Ashbury scene.
• Live at the Fillmore Auditorium 10/15/66 Late Show — Signe’s Farewell: The Grace Slick era of the Airplane has understandably received most of the attention paid the band over the years. But they had released a good album (Jefferson Airplane Takes Off) and were already a powerful live outfit before Slick came aboard. The 10/15/66 release not only marks the first appearance on CD of a live recording featuring Signe Anderson with the band, but also her very last show. Both Marty Balin and the Fillmore’s Bill Graham give her shout-outs. Songs include “3/5ths of a Mile in Ten Seconds,” “Tobacco Road,” “Midnight Hour,” “High Flyin’ Bird” and “Chauffeur Blues” (which Grace never performed out of respect for Signe, who’d made the old blues tune her own). It was the end of an era. But a new one was about to begin the very next day, and is the subject of the 10/16/66 release.
• Live at the Fillmore Auditorium 10/16/66 Early & Late Shows — Grace’s Debut: The 10/16/66 volume chronicles the first set of concerts featuring Grace Slick as a member of the Airplane, a mere day after Signe Anderson officially left the band. The band has yet to add the material Slick brought to the band (“Somebody To Love” and “White Rabbit) to the set list, but Grace’s harmony work with Marty and Paul is impressive, and you can literally hear her confidence growing from the first set to the second. The album contains “The Other Side of This Life,” “Let Me In,” “Don’t Let Me Down,” “Run Around” and “High Flying Bird,” plus versions of “3/5ths of a Mile in 10 Seconds” and “Tobacco Road” with the new line-up, and Leiber & Stoller’s “Kansas City,” which has never appeared on any Airplane studio or live album. Surrealistic Pillow photographer Herbie Greene contributes photos. Things would never be the same for the band or for ’60s rock.
• Live at the Fillmore Auditorium 11/25/66 & 11/27/66 — We Have Ignition: CCM Live subtitled these shows “We Have Ignition” as they believe this is when the Airplane transformed from a high-flying bird into a psychedelic spaceship (but not yet a Starship.) It’s difficult to believe, when comparing these November shows with Grace’s live debut on 10/16/66, that only six weeks have elapsed. Not only has the band (particularly guitarist Jorma Kaukonen) progressed as musicians, but the infusion of Surrealistic Pillow material some four months before the album hit the stores shifts the focus of this folk-rock band to rock. Included are “Plastic Fantastic Lover,” “High Flyin’ Bird,” “Bringing Me Down,” “ D.C.B.A-25,” “My Best Friend,” “Go to Her,” “She Has Funny Cars,” “3/5ths of a Mile in 10 Seconds,” “Skip Spence’s “J.P.P. McStep B Blues,” “White Rabbit,” “Today” and more. Two rarities are a mind blowing, 9:45-minute version of “The Other Side of Life” (performed for a photo session) that neither its author, the folk singer-songwriter Fred Neil, nor the band could ever have anticipated, and the only known recording of an instrumental known in some quarters as “My Grandfather’s Clock.” This is the Airplane at its early apex.
• Return to the Matrix 2/1/68: The Airplane returned to the first club they ever played, the Matrix, in 1968 for a 103-minute show at the height of their commercial prowess. They band premiered two songs from the Crown of Creation album (which was months away from being released): “Share a Little Joke” and an instrumental version of “Ice Cream Phoenix.” They also performed “Blues From an Airplane,” a song from its first (pre-Slick) album. Also here: “Somebody to Love,” “Young Girl Sunday Blues,” “She Has Funny Cars,” “Two Heads,” “Martha,” “Kansas City,” “Other Side of this Life,” “Today,” “Won’t You Try/Saturday Afternoon,” “It’s No Secret,” “Watch Her Ride,” “Plastic Fantastic Lover,” “Ballad of You and Me and Pooneil,” “White Rabbit,” “Fat Angel” and “3/5ths of a Mile in 10 Seconds.”

The Legacy edition of Jimi Hendrix Experience: BBC Sessions brings together recordings from Hendrix's appearances on a variety of BBC radio and television broadcasts from 1967 through 1969. The two CD Jimi Hendrix Experience: BBC Sessions comes packaged in a six-panel digipak and includes a never before released 30 minute bonus DVD documentary. The film features the group’s famed January 1969 appearance on "Happening For Lulu" which featured Hendrix interrupting the live broadcast to perform a ferocious rendition of Cream’s “Sunshine Of Your Love” together with interviews with Jimi Hendrix Experience bandmates Mitch Mitchell and Noel Redding as well as BBC staff producers Jeff Griffin and Bernie Andrews detailing the legendary sessions. The acclaimed 2 CD set includes Hendrix’s unique interpretations of such classics as Bob Dylan’s “Can You Please Crawl Out Your Window?,” Muddy Waters “Hoochie Coochie Man” [with noted British blues enthusiast Alexis Korner on slide guitar], the Beatles “Day Tripper” as well as two songs featuring the dream pairing of Stevie Wonder with Hendrix.
