The T.A.M.I. Show Director Steve Binder Available For Interviews
In Stores March 23
"In the top three of all rock movies" -- Quentin Tarantino
Number 15 on the '100 Greatest Moments in Rock History' -- VH1
Los Angeles, CA – One of the rarest rock events ever captured on film, the 1964 concert known as The T.A.M.I. Show, featuring performances by future Rock and Roll Hall of Famers the Rolling Stones, James Brown, Chuck Berry, the Beach Boys, Marvin Gaye, Smokey Robinson & The Miracles, the Supremes, and many others, will be officially released for the first time by Shout! Factory on March 23. The T.A.M.I. Show: Collector’s Edition includes exciting new bonus features including new commentary by director Steve Binder, original T.A.M.I. Show radio spots, and a 20-page booklet with liner notes and rare photos and memorabilia.
The T.A.M.I. Show was filmed live at the Santa Monica Civic Auditorium in 1964, a mere seven months after the Beatles appeared on The Ed Sullivan Show and introduced the Swinging ’60s to America. This legendary film has never been available on DVD and hasn’t been seen in its entirety since it originally appeared in theaters, including its "world premiere" at 33 Los Angeles area theaters on November 14, 1964. Mastered from a new High-Definition transfer and restored to its original length, this complete version features the Beach Boys performances that were removed shortly after the film’s initial theatrical run.
The T.A.M.I. Show is the first concert movie of the rock era, capturing such superstars as the Rolling Stones (with the late Brian Jones), James Brown, Chuck Berry, the Beach Boys, the Supremes, Marvin Gaye, the Miracles (featuring Smokey Robinson), and many other Motown and British Invasion acts in their early prime. Aside from the five rock groups, all the performers are backed by a band that we've now come to know as “the Wrecking Crew,” famed for playing on all the Phil Spector-produced hits, and included future stars Glen Campbell and Leon Russell among others. Fanita James, Jean King, and future solo star Darlene Love, billed as The Blossoms, provide backing vocals.
This special set is what music fans have been waiting for: the ultimate collector’s edition of this long-unavailable landmark film. Critically acclaimed and long sought after, the film contains James Brown’s legendary performance, which was a major influence on Michael Jackson, Prince, Mick Jagger, Sting, Beck and many others. Rick Rubin calls it “the single greatest rock & roll performance ever captured on film.” The T.A.M.I. Show was added to the Library Congress’s National Film Registry in 2006.

The Who Wrong For The SuperBowl

by Paul Cashmere
Family groups have attacked the choice of The Who as star act for the SuperBowl.
The Who have been booked to play the Superbowl halftime show.
The legendary British band will perform at the interval of the NFL Super Bowl XLIV halftime show in Miami, Florida on February 7th.
The annual game is the biggest date in the American sports calendar.
But speaking to the South Florida Sun Sentinel, said while it had no problem with the band, its only objection was that guitarist Pete Townshend - who was arrested and cautioned by police in 2003 for accessing child pornography - performing with them.
Founder and chief executive officer Evin Daly said: "The Who is a great band. Pete Townshend is the only issue here."
But speaking to the Associated Press, NFL spokesman Brian McCarthy said despite the protests, the band would still be playing the halftime show.
He is quoted as saying: "UK police cleared him since he was doing research for a project on child abuse."
Townshend was cautioned and placed on the Sex Offenders Register for five years after he admitted using his credit card to look at a pedophile website for research into child abuse.
He was cleared on a separate charge of possessing indecent pictures downloaded from the web.

Steeleye Span Founder Tim Hart Dead From Lung Cancer
by Paul Cashmere
Steeleye Span founder Tim Hart has died at the age of 61 from lung cancer.
Hart was diagnosed 12 months ago in December 2008 and told the cancer was inoperable.
Tim Hart formed his first band Rattfinks while he was still at St Albans High School. The school also generated another famous band, The Zombies.
In 1970, Hart formed Steeleye Span with Maddy Prior. The group regularly toured the United States and Australia.
Hart’s first solo album came in 1979. Prior contributed vocals to the record.
In 1988, Hart’s health declined and he gave up music to become a writer and photographer.
He was persuaded to perform again in 1995 for the charity War Child. He was part of a five hour performance that featured almost every previous member of Steeleye Span.
In 2008, he once again reunited with Prior for a one-off performance for BBC’s Electric Proms.
Tim Hart died in the early morning of December 24, 2009.
Watch the original promo video for Steeleye Span’s ‘All Around My Hat’ from 1975:
Like any rock star worth his salt, Carlos Santana claims to be quite the night owl. But he’s not out partying and causing trouble. Nope, Carlos spends the midnight hours writing music.
(Cut #3) “I like to create like between 11:30 ‘til like four o’clock in the morning, three. ‘Cause the whole world’s asleep, and the phone don’t ring, and you know, it’s unobstructed, it’s yours.”
Santana kicks off a slew of shows at the Hard Rock in Las Vegas on February 3rd.

Experience Hendrix LLC & Legacy Recordings Launch Monumental Jimi Hendrix
Catalog Project With Collection Documenting Pivotal Creative Period in
Valleys of Neptune Available Everywhere Tuesday, March 9
* * * * *
Experience Hendrix LLC and Sony Music Entertainment's Legacy Recordings
launch their monumental 2010 Jimi Hendrix Catalog Project on Tuesday, March
9, with the release of Valleys of Neptune, a newly curated album of 12
fully realized studio recordings, more than 60 minutes of music never
commercially available on a Jimi Hendrix album, from the artist Rolling
Stone magazine called the greatest guitarist of all time.
Centered around tracks recorded during a pivotal and turbulent four-month
period in 1969, Valleys of Neptune unveils the original Jimi Hendrix
Experience's final studio recordings, as the group lays down the foundation
for its follow-up to Electric Ladyland, alongside the guitar superhero's
first sessions with bassist Billy Cox, an old army buddy he'd recruited
into his new ensemble.
Valleys of Neptune provides an essential, compelling, and up-til-now
largely unseen view of what Jimi Hendrix was up to musically in the
critical period between the release of Electric Ladyland in October 1968
and the 1970 opening of his own Electric Lady Studios in Greenwich Village,
the state of the art facility where he would begin his final project, the
ambitious double album First Rays of the New Rising Sun.
Janie Hendrix, CEO of Experience Hendrix LLC, the Hendrix family-owned
company entrusted with preserving and protecting the legacy of Jimi
Hendrix, noted, "My brother Jimi was at home in the studio. Valleys of
Neptune offers deep insight into his mastery of the recording process and
demonstrates the fact that he was as unparalleled a recording innovator as
he was a guitarist. His brilliance shines through on every one of these
precious tracks."
Valleys of Neptune is originality electrified, offering more than 60
minutes of previously unreleased Jimi Hendrix music, originally recorded,
and newly mixed for this historic release, by Hendrix's longtime engineer
Eddie Kramer, who first worked with the guitarist on Are You Experienced?
in 1967. Valleys of Neptune is produced by Janie Hendrix, John McDermott
(who contributes detailed liner notes to the album) and Eddie Kramer.
"Valleys of Neptune" has long been one of the most sought after of any
commercially unavailable Jimi Hendrix recording. The song will be released
as a single globally on February 2, 2010, nearly forty years after Jimi
finished recording the track at New York's Record Plant in May of 1970.
Other highlights on Valleys of Neptune include blazing studio covers of
Elmore James' classic "Bleeding Heart" and Cream's "Sunshine of Your Love"
as well as premier performances of original Hendrix compositions like
"Ships Passing Through The Night," "Lullaby For The Summer" and the
original un-dubbed Jimi Hendrix Experience rendition of "Hear My Train A
Comin'." Also included in Valleys of Neptune is "Mr. Bad Luck," a Jimi
Hendrix Experience track, produced by Chas Chandler during the 1967 Axis:
Bold as Love sessions.
As part of the opening wave of releases for the Jimi Hendrix Catalog
Project, Legacy Recordings will also be releasing new deluxe CD/DVD
editions of Are You Experienced?, Axis: Bold As Love, Electric Ladyland,
and First Rays of the New Rising Sun, also available on vinyl, on March 9.
Each of the essential titles in the Jimi Hendrix catalog to be newly
reissued on Legacy will feature a bonus DVD featuring newly created
documentaries directed by the Grammy award winning Bob Smeaton [Beatles
Anthology, Festival Express, Beatles: The Studio Recordings] and featuring
interviews with Experience members Noel Redding, Mitch Mitchell, Billy Cox,
original producer Chas Chandler and engineer Eddie Kramer. In addition,
Smash Hits, Jimi's original compilation, will be reintroduced. The
critically acclaimed Live At Woodstock will be available as a standard DVD
as well as a Blu-ray Disc.
"No artist has ever transformed the pop music landscape as profoundly or
as permanently as Jimi Hendrix," said Adam Block, Senior Vice President and
General Manager, Legacy Recordings. "We are proud to be partnering with
Experience Hendrix in releasing Valleys of Neptune, a treasure for Hendrix
fans both new and experienced. It's an auspicious start in fulfilling a
shared vision for the Jimi Hendrix catalog going forward."

Yoko Ono To Write Biography of John Lennon
Yoko Ono will tell the story of her late husband John Lennon.
The 76-year-old widow of the late former Beatle has revealed she will put
pen to paper over the next few years and write an autobiography about her
eventful life with John.
She said: 'I would love to do it. I just have to find the time.
'It will be my next book, which will be written in the next five years.'
Yoko – who was blamed by many Beatles’ fans for causing the legendary
band to split – previously claimed she wouldn’t release a book for fear
of hurting the families of people close to the group, including John’s
ex-wife Cynthia Lennon.
John’s marriage to Cynthia broke down as his fame grew and shortly after
he met artist and musician Yoko.
The couple – who had a son Julian together - divorced in 1968, one year
before his marriage to Yoko, the mother of his son Sean.
Yoko is looking forward to revealing all about their affair and dispel the
myths surrounding The Beatles’ break up.
A Beatles expert said: 'Unlike Cynthia, Yoko has never really told her
side of the Beatles story and the truth about her affair and subsequent
marriage to John, so the book will be much awaited.
'She’s always maintained she never broke up The Beatles, so this will be
her chance to put the record straight.'
John died in 1980, after being shot by a deranged fan outside his
apartment building in New York.
Drummers from around the world are getting behind their kits to help bring
peace in Sudan. NME reports that the Sudan365 campaign launched today and
sees Nick Mason from Pink Floyd, Stewart Copeland from The Police and
Radiohead drummer Phil Selway appearing in a film that features a “drum
beat for peace.” Fans can learn more at now.
The Allman Brothers Band has released details of their annual New York
City residency. This year, the group will perform eight shows at the
United Palace Theatre uptown on 175th street. The dates include March 11th
to the 13th, the 15th and 16th, and the 18th through the 20th. The band
won’t be touring much this year so its members can focus on other
projects, so be sure to get your tickets soon. They go on sale January
15th at Learn more at
• While the shows are typically held at the Beacon Theatre, they
had to be moved this year due to a scheduling conflict.
Will there ever be another Led Zeppelin reunion? Guitarist Jimmy Page
says it’s all up to singer Robert Plant. Page told Nightwatchers House
of Rock, “Musicians can always play together but I don’t think you can
go out with a band called Led Zeppelin if you haven’t got the original
vocalist.” In the meantime, Jimmy is working on new music for an as yet
unconfirmed project.
Jack Bruce
Composing Himself
The Authorized Biography
By Harry Shapiro, Foreword by Eric Clapton

When Cream broke up in 1968 it was by no means a foregone conclusion that
it would be Eric Clapton who would enjoy continued commercial success.
After all, it was Jack Bruce who had the looks, and who co-wrote and sang
all the band’s major hits, including ‘Sunshine of Your Love’, ‘I
Feel Free’ and ‘White Room’. But he was a singular talent who wanted
to be a pioneer, not just a pop star, and he was never happy resting on his

Bruce’s formative years set the tone for a musical journey that has
twisted and turned through the decades, moving through and combining many
genres and styles. His background is in classical music and jazz; at 10 he
was winning classical song contests, at 12 composing string quartets and
improvising on piano. Then he fell in love with Thelonious Monk and Charlie
Mingus and left home at 18 to find his fortune as a jazz bass player. He
found his way into the London blues scene and played with luminaries such
as John Mayall and Graham Bond before first tasting chart success with
Manfred Mann. Then there was Cream, one of the most influential rock bands
of their time, who sold 35 million albums during their two-year existence.
Cream split in their prime but their influence endured, and when they
reformed in 2005 tickets were selling for nearly £2000 on e-bay.

In the 40 years since Cream split Bruce has continued his musical
adventures with the likes of John McLaughlin, Billy Cobham, Carla Bley and
Mick Taylor, never quite achieving the success and recognition he deserves.
It has been an often troubled life - heroin addiction, management rip-offs,
family tragedy, and a failed liver transplant, all of which he speaks about
frankly in this book, telling a story that is sometimes inspirational,
sometimes bleak, and always honest.

Harry Shapiro is an author, journalist and lecturer who has written widely
on the subjects of drugs, popular music and film. He is the author of
Waiting for the Man: the Story of Drugs and Popular Music, Shooting Stars:
Drugs, Hollywood and the Movies, Jimi Hendrix: Electric Gypsy and
biographies of Graham Bond and Alexis Korner.

Jimmy Page Launches UK Album Stamp Set

by Paul Cashmere

Led Zeppelin guitarist Jimmy Page has launched a classic album stamp set
in the UK featuring Led Zeppelin IV.

The 10 stamp set also includes Pink Floyd ‘The Division Bell’. The
Clash ‘London Calling, Rolling Stones ‘Let It Bleed’, David Bowie
‘Ziggy Stardust’ as well as covers from Primal Scream, Blur, Coldplay,
Mike Oldfield and New Order.

The UK Royal Mail researched thousands of covers before deciding on the
top 10.

Plant spoke at the launch saying "Almost 40 years after the album came
out, nobody knows the old man who featured on the cover, nor the artist who
painted him. That sort of sums up what we wanted to achieve with the album
cover, which has remained both anonymous and enigmatic at the same time."

Thanks to Dave Basner for these news stories...

Jimmy Page recently revealed he planned to write new music this year and
now, according to, the Led Zeppelin guitarist is claiming
that he will make radical statements with his upcoming album. Jimmy stated
he thinks it’s important to make “musical statements” with his new
material and promised to do something “ambitious” adding, “Musically,
it will be a different picture in quite a radical frame, I hope.” No
word yet on when the effort will come out. Read more at
• The album will be Jimmy’s first solo record since 1988’s
