Links By George March 1st

Greetings from a fine day in Nimbin. The rains have brought on more lushness
and the hellicopters haven't destroyed too many crops. My computer has taken
a terminal pause which was an opportunity for Stephanie and I to travel a few
hours north for camping at Great Keppel Island. One of the last coastal areas
that hasn't succumbed to the developers.
A new computer is on the way thanks to the very appreciated donation
of my friend Siva who supports the intention of keeping free minded news accessable.

QUOTES FOR THE WEEK:

"For those who stubbornly seek freedom, there can be no more urgent task than to come to understand the mechanisms and practices of indoctrination. These are easy to perceive in the totalitarian societies, much less so in the system of 'brainwashing under freedom' to which we are subjected and in which all too often we serve as unwilling instruments." Noam Chomsky
=
"Civil disobedience is not our problem. Our problem is civil obedience. Our problem is that numbers of people all over the world have obeyed the dictates of the leaders of their government and have gone to war, and millions have been killed because of this obedience. Our problem is that people are obedient all over the world in the face of poverty and starvation and stupidity, and war, and cruelty. Our problem is that people are obedient while the jails are full of petty thieves, and all the while the grand thieves are running and robbing the country. That's our problem.": Howard Zinn, from 'Failure to Quit'
=
"With numbing regularity good people were seen to knuckle under the demands of authority and perform actions that were callous and severe. Men who are in everyday life responsible and decent were seduced by the trappings of authority, by the control of their perceptions, and by the uncritical acceptance of the experimenter's definition of the situation, into performing harsh acts. A substantial proportion of people do what they are told to do, irrespective of the content of the act and without limitations of conscience, so long as they perceive that the command comes from a legitimate authority" Stanley Milgram, 1965
"It is also important for the State to inculcate in its subjects an aversion to any "conspiracy theory of history"; for a search for "conspiracies" means a search for motives and an attribution of responsibility for historical misdeeds. - Furthermore, an attack on "conspiracy theories" means that the subjects will become more gullible in believing the "general welfare" reasons that are always put forth by the State for engaging in any of its despotic actions. A "conspiracy theory" can unsettle the system by causing the public to doubt the State's ideological propaganda." Professor Murray N. Rothbard -
=
"The three aims of the tyrant are, one, the humiliation of his subjects; he knows that a mean-spirited man will not conspire against anybody; two, the creation of mistrust among them; for a tyrant is not to be overthrown until men begin to have confidence in one another -- and this is the reason why tyrants are at war with the good; they are under the idea that their power is endangered by them, not only because they will not be ruled despotically, but also because they are too loyal to one another and to other men, and do not inform against one another or against other men -- three, the tyrant desires that all his subjects shall be incapable of action, for no one attempts what is impossible and they will not attempt to overthrow a tyranny if they are powerless." Aristotle
=
"Let us never tolerate outrageous conspiracy theories concerning the attacks of September the 11th; malicious lies that attempt to shift the blame away from the terrorists, themselves, away from the guilty." George W. Bush
=
=
"The conscious and intelligent manipulation of the organized habits and opinions of the [public] is an important element in democratic society. Those who manipulate this unseen mechanism of society constitute an invisible government which is the true ruling power of our country." Edward Bernays
Half a truth is often a great lie: Benjamin Franklin
=
"The most brilliant propagandist technique will yield no success unless one fundamental principle is borne in mind constantly...it must confine itself to a few points and repeat them over and over.": Joseph Goebbels, Nazi Propaganda Minister
=
"The process [of mass-media deception] has to be conscious, or it would not be carried out with sufficient precision, but it also has to be unconscious, or it would bring with it a feeling of falsity and hence of guilt.... To tell deliberate lies while genuinely believing in them, to forget any fact that has become inconvenient, and then, when it becomes necessary again, to draw it back from oblivion for just so long as it is needed, to deny the existence of objective reality and all the while to take account of the reality which one denies - all this is indispensably necessary.": George Orwell in the book 1984
=
Like the effect of advertising upon the customer, the methods of political propaganda tend to increase the feeling of insignificance of the individual voter: Erich Fromm, psychoanalyst and social philosopher, 1900-1980
"There is no flag large enough to cover the shame of killing innocent people." : U.S. historian Howard Zinn, 1993
=
"Can any reasonable man be well disposed toward a government which makes war and carnage the only means of supporting itself?" -- Alexander Hamilton (1757-1804) Source: at the US Constitutional Convention
=
"Those in power need checks and restraints lest they come to identify the common good for their own tastes and desires, and their continuation in office as essential to the preservation of the nation." -- Justice William O. Douglas (1898-1980), U. S. Supreme Court Justice Source: We, The Judges, 1956

Nationalism is our form of incest, is our idolatry, is our insanity.

"Patriotism" is its cult. It should hardly be necessary to say, that by "patriotism" I mean that attitude which puts the own nation above humanity, above the principles of truth and justice; not the loving interest in one's own nation, which is the concern with the nation's spiritual as much as with its material welfare-never with its power over other nations.

Just as love for one individual which excludes the love for others is not love, love for one's country which is not part of one's love for humanity is not love, but idolatrous worship.: Erich Fromm (1900-1980), U.S. psychologist.

"There will be, in the next generation or so, a pharmacological method of making people love their servitude, and producing dictatorship without tears, so to speak, producing a kind of painless concentration camp for entire societies, so that people will in fact have their liberties taken away from them, but will rather enjoy it, because they will be distracted from any desire to rebel by propaganda or brainwashing, or brainwashing enhanced by pharmacological methods. And this seems to be the final revolution." - Aldous Huxley, Tavistock Group, California Medical School, 1961

=
The mass of mankind has not been born with saddles on their backs, nor a favored few to ride them. Thomas Jefferson

=
Because we fear the responsibility for our actions, we have allowed ourselves to develop the mentality of slaves. Contrary to the stirring sentiments of the Declaration of Independence, we now pledge "our Lives, our Fortunes and our sacred Honor" not to one another for our mutual protection, but to the state, whose actions continue to exploit, despoil, and destroy us: Butler D. Shaffer

SEE THE PLASTIC ONO BAND’S REHEARSAL
On February 16th, Yoko Ono will reunite the Plastic Ono Band to perform their first show in 40 years in front of a sold-out crowd at the Brooklyn Academy of Music. And now, Yoko has opened up the dress rehearsal the night before to fans. On the 15th, concertgoers can watch the core Plastic Ono Band warm-up. Tickets to see the band in this once-in-a-lifetime way are available now at BAM.org.
DYLAN SONG INSPIRES CHILDREN’S BOOK
“Man Gave Names to All the Animals,” a song off Bob Dylan’s 1979 album Slow Train Coming, has inspired a children’s book. According to TwentyFourBit.com, the book, also called Man Gave Names to All the Animals, will boast drawings inspired by Dylan’s lyrics and include a CD that features the song. Artist Jim Arnoksy, who is working on the book, said Dylan has given his blessing to the project. No word yet on when the book will come out.
NEW HENDRIX VIDEO
There is now a video accompanying Jimi Hendrix’s new single, “Valleys of Neptune.” The clip uses one of the rocker’s paintings as a motif. That watercolor was chosen by Jimi’s sister, Janie Hendrix, who controls his estate. She told Spinner that she felt the artwork “screamed ‘Valleys of Neptune.’” Check out the clip at Spinner.com. Meanwhile, the Valleys of Neptune album hits shelves on March 9th.
GRATEFUL DEAD GIG COMING TO CD/DVD
On July 7th, 1989, the Grateful Dead performed at Philadelphia’s John F. Kennedy Stadium and in April, that show will be available on CD and DVD. The three-disc, one-DVD set is called Crimson, White & Indigo and boasts 19 songs including two Bob Dylan covers, plus a booklet of rare photos. You can get the package on April 20th.
BECK TALKS ABOUT HIS GIGS WITH CLAPTON
On their recent show in New York City, two of the greatest living guitarists. Eric Clapton and Jeff Beck each played their own set before taking the stage together at Madison Square Garden. The two have scheduled just a handful of performances across the globe, marking the first time in 40 years that they’ve played together like this. Jeff told us why that is the case.
(Cut #1) “It seems to be, duh, obvious, why didn’t we do it before, but Eric is strictly blues and strictly his audience and I never thought the twain should meet somehow, I really didn’t. Although we occupy certain areas of guitar, you know, blues oriented guitar, we shouldn’t ever do this. There was no necessity or inbuilt desire for either of us to do it but promoters see it different and I think Joe Blow public would probably like to see that anyway.”
Beck went on to describe what fans can expect at the shows he plays with Clapton.
(Cut #2) “You can’t expect a chemistry that will send a new rocket up to Mars because that’s what we are, there will be a disparate style and the closest we can dovetail is the set that I do with Eric. I have to put another hat on for his set, completely, otherwise I’d look stupid standing up playing high tech noise over his songs and vice-versa, blues over my stuff. So I’m more of a sideman to Eric than a main, featured guest. I just sit and play the best I can on his song.”
ALLMAN BROTHERS BAND TO STREAM SHOWS ONLINE
If you can’t make it to New York next month to catch the Allman Brothers Band’s annual residency, fret not – the group plans to stream every show online. For a subscription fee, fans can watch each of the 13 shows on drummer Butch Trucks’ Web site, Moogis.com. The concerts get underway on March 11th so head to Moogis.com now to learn more.
RELEASE DATE SET FOR DOORS DOCUMENTARY
There is now a release date for the Johnny Depp-narrated documentary about The Doors. The film, called When You’re Strange: A Film about The Doors, will hit theaters on April 9th. The movie is comprised entirely of archival footage and tells the legendary quartet’s story, giving a previously unseen view of the band at work and play. Meanwhile, the soundtrack to the flick comes out on March 30th. Learn more at

YOKO ONO ON REFORMING THE PLASTIC ONO BAND
Tonight in Brooklyn, Yoko Ono will reunite the Plastic Ono Band for their first live show in 40 years. While it marks the group’s first stage performance in that time, with the help of Ono’s son Sean Lennon, the band got back together recently to work on Yoko’s latest album, Between My Head and the Sky. Yoko told us that Sean, who is now part of the Plastic Ono Band, was the brains behind the reunion, but she wasn’t immediately sold on the idea.
(Cut #5) “Sean asked me. Sean said, ‘Is it alright if you bring Plastic Ono Band up again?’ And I said, ‘Yeah, well, I don’t know about that.’ At first I didn’t think it was a good idea. I don’t know. And then I realized that the reason why I didn’t want to use it was because John passed away and suddenly I had that block, you know.”
Eric Clapton, Bette Midler, Paul Simon and many others will be on stage with the Plastic Ono Band tonight. Learn more at BAM.org.
DEPP WORKING ON KEITH RICHARDS DOCUMENTARY
Johnny Depp is set to direct a documentary about Rolling Stone Keith Richards. In a European interview, Depp revealed he’s working on the flick now and his editor is sorting through tons of concert footage. Johnny went on to say, “I’m very touched that Keith agreed to show up in front of my cameras.” The actor based his “Jack Sparrow” character from The Pirates of the Caribbean films on Keith and Richards even shows up in one of the movies, playing “Sparrow’s” dad. Read more about Depp’s documentary at

ROBERT PLANT SCHEDULES CHARITY CONCERT
Robert Plant has scheduled a charity concert for this month to help the Cancer Research U-K organization. The gig will take place at Abbey Road on February 25th as part of the Sound & Vision event. The Led Zeppelin singer will be joined by singer-songwriter Beth Nielsen Chapman and the London Oriana Choir. Plant described his upcoming performance saying, “My set is quite different from anything I’ve done before, as I’ll be performing with Beth and a full choir on stage.” Bid on special tickets and memorabilia and learn more at SoundAndVisionEbay.com.
