Links By George March 1st

Greetings from a fine day in Nimbin. The rains have brought on more lushness
and the hellicopters haven't destroyed too many crops. My computer has taken
a terminal pause which was an opportunity for Stephanie and I to travel a few
hours north for camping at Great Keppel Island. One of the last coastal areas
that hasn't succumbed to the developers.
A new computer is on the way thanks to the very appreciated donation
of my friend Siva who supports the intention of keeping free minded news accessable.

QUOTES FOR THE WEEK:

"For those who stubbornly seek freedom, there can be no more urgent task than to come to understand the mechanisms and practices of indoctrination. These are easy to perceive in the totalitarian societies, much less so in the system of 'brainwashing under freedom' to which we are subjected and in which all too often we serve as unwilling instruments." Noam Chomsky
=
"Civil disobedience is not our problem. Our problem is civil obedience. Our problem is that numbers of people all over the world have obeyed the dictates of the leaders of their government and have gone to war, and millions have been killed because of this obedience. Our problem is that people are obedient all over the world in the face of poverty and starvation and stupidity, and war, and cruelty. Our problem is that people are obedient while the jails are full of petty thieves, and all the while the grand thieves are running and robbing the country. That's our problem.": Howard Zinn, from 'Failure to Quit'
=
"With numbing regularity good people were seen to knuckle under the demands of authority and perform actions that were callous and severe. Men who are in everyday life responsible and decent were seduced by the trappings of authority, by the control of their perceptions, and by the uncritical acceptance of the experimenter's definition of the situation, into performing harsh acts. A substantial proportion of people do what they are told to do, irrespective of the content of the act and without limitations of conscience, so long as they perceive that the command comes from a legitimate authority" Stanley Milgram, 1965
"It is also important for the State to inculcate in its subjects an aversion to any "conspiracy theory of history"; for a search for "conspiracies" means a search for motives and an attribution of responsibility for historical misdeeds. - Furthermore, an attack on "conspiracy theories" means that the subjects will become more gullible in believing the "general welfare" reasons that are always put forth by the State for engaging in any of its despotic actions. A "conspiracy theory" can unsettle the system by causing the public to doubt the State's ideological propaganda." Professor Murray N. Rothbard -
=
"The three aims of the tyrant are, one, the humiliation of his subjects; he knows that a mean-spirited man will not conspire against anybody; two, the creation of mistrust among them; for a tyrant is not to be overthrown until men begin to have confidence in one another -- and this is the reason why tyrants are at war with the good; they are under the idea that their power is endangered by them, not only because they will not be ruled despotically, but also because they are too loyal to one another and to other men, and do not inform against one another or against other men -- three, the tyrant desires that all his subjects shall be incapable of action, for no one attempts what is impossible and they will not attempt to overthrow a tyranny if they are powerless." Aristotle
=
"Let us never tolerate outrageous conspiracy theories concerning the attacks of September the 11th; malicious lies that attempt to shift the blame away from the terrorists, themselves, away from the guilty." George W. Bush
=
=
"The conscious and intelligent manipulation of the organized habits and opinions of the [public] is an important element in democratic society. Those who manipulate this unseen mechanism of society constitute an invisible government which is the true ruling power of our country." Edward Bernays
Half a truth is often a great lie: Benjamin Franklin
=
"The most brilliant propagandist technique will yield no success unless one fundamental principle is borne in mind constantly...it must confine itself to a few points and repeat them over and over.": Joseph Goebbels, Nazi Propaganda Minister
=
"The process [of mass-media deception] has to be conscious, or it would not be carried out with sufficient precision, but it also has to be unconscious, or it would bring with it a feeling of falsity and hence of guilt.... To tell deliberate lies while genuinely believing in them, to forget any fact that has become inconvenient, and then, when it becomes necessary again, to draw it back from oblivion for just so long as it is needed, to deny the existence of objective reality and all the while to take account of the reality which one denies - all this is indispensably necessary.": George Orwell in the book 1984
=
Like the effect of advertising upon the customer, the methods of political propaganda tend to increase the feeling of insignificance of the individual voter: Erich Fromm, psychoanalyst and social philosopher, 1900-1980
"There is no flag large enough to cover the shame of killing innocent people." : U.S. historian Howard Zinn, 1993
=
"Can any reasonable man be well disposed toward a government which makes war and carnage the only means of supporting itself?" -- Alexander Hamilton (1757-1804) Source: at the US Constitutional Convention
=
"Those in power need checks and restraints lest they come to identify the common good for their own tastes and desires, and their continuation in office as essential to the preservation of the nation." -- Justice William O. Douglas (1898-1980), U. S. Supreme Court Justice Source: We, The Judges, 1956

Nationalism is our form of incest, is our idolatry, is our insanity.

"Patriotism" is its cult. It should hardly be necessary to say, that by "patriotism" I mean that attitude which puts the own nation above humanity, above the principles of truth and justice; not the loving interest in one's own nation, which is the concern with the nation's spiritual as much as with its material welfare-never with its power over other nations.

Just as love for one individual which excludes the love for others is not love, love for one's country which is not part of one's love for humanity is not love, but idolatrous worship.: Erich Fromm (1900-1980), U.S. psychologist.

"There will be, in the next generation or so, a pharmacological method of making people love their servitude, and producing dictatorship without tears, so to speak, producing a kind of painless concentration camp for entire societies, so that people will in fact have their liberties taken away from them, but will rather enjoy it, because they will be distracted from any desire to rebel by propaganda or brainwashing, or brainwashing enhanced by pharmacological methods. And this seems to be the final revolution." - Aldous Huxley, Tavistock Group, California Medical School, 1961

=
The mass of mankind has not been born with saddles on their backs, nor a favored few to ride them. Thomas Jefferson

=
Because we fear the responsibility for our actions, we have allowed ourselves to develop the mentality of slaves. Contrary to the stirring sentiments of the Declaration of Independence, we now pledge "our Lives, our Fortunes and our sacred Honor" not to one another for our mutual protection, but to the state, whose actions continue to exploit, despoil, and destroy us: Butler D. Shaffer

SEE THE PLASTIC ONO BAND’S REHEARSAL
On February 16th, Yoko Ono will reunite the Plastic Ono Band to perform their first show in 40 years in front of a sold-out crowd at the Brooklyn Academy of Music. And now, Yoko has opened up the dress rehearsal the night before to fans. On the 15th, concertgoers can watch the core Plastic Ono Band warm-up. Tickets to see the band in this once-in-a-lifetime way are available now at BAM.org.
DYLAN SONG INSPIRES CHILDREN’S BOOK
“Man Gave Names to All the Animals,” a song off Bob Dylan’s 1979 album Slow Train Coming, has inspired a children’s book. According to TwentyFourBit.com, the book, also called Man Gave Names to All the Animals, will boast drawings inspired by Dylan’s lyrics and include a CD that features the song. Artist Jim Arnoksy, who is working on the book, said Dylan has given his blessing to the project. No word yet on when the book will come out.
NEW HENDRIX VIDEO
There is now a video accompanying Jimi Hendrix’s new single, “Valleys of Neptune.” The clip uses one of the rocker’s paintings as a motif. That watercolor was chosen by Jimi’s sister, Janie Hendrix, who controls his estate. She told Spinner that she felt the artwork “screamed ‘Valleys of Neptune.’” Check out the clip at Spinner.com. Meanwhile, the Valleys of Neptune album hits shelves on March 9th.
GRATEFUL DEAD GIG COMING TO CD/DVD
On July 7th, 1989, the Grateful Dead performed at Philadelphia’s John F. Kennedy Stadium and in April, that show will be available on CD and DVD. The three-disc, one-DVD set is called Crimson, White & Indigo and boasts 19 songs including two Bob Dylan covers, plus a booklet of rare photos. You can get the package on April 20th.
BECK TALKS ABOUT HIS GIGS WITH CLAPTON
On their recent show in New York City, two of the greatest living guitarists. Eric Clapton and Jeff Beck each played their own set before taking the stage together at Madison Square Garden. The two have scheduled just a handful of performances across the globe, marking the first time in 40 years that they’ve played together like this. Jeff told us why that is the case.
(Cut #1) “It seems to be, duh, obvious, why didn’t we do it before, but Eric is strictly blues and strictly his audience and I never thought the twain should meet somehow, I really didn’t. Although we occupy certain areas of guitar, you know, blues oriented guitar, we shouldn’t ever do this. There was no necessity or inbuilt desire for either of us to do it but promoters see it different and I think Joe Blow public would probably like to see that anyway.”
Beck went on to describe what fans can expect at the shows he plays with Clapton.
(Cut #2) “You can’t expect a chemistry that will send a new rocket up to Mars because that’s what we are, there will be a disparate style and the closest we can dovetail is the set that I do with Eric. I have to put another hat on for his set, completely, otherwise I’d look stupid standing up playing high tech noise over his songs and vice-versa, blues over my stuff. So I’m more of a sideman to Eric than a main, featured guest. I just sit and play the best I can on his song.”
ALLMAN BROTHERS BAND TO STREAM SHOWS ONLINE
If you can’t make it to New York next month to catch the Allman Brothers Band’s annual residency, fret not – the group plans to stream every show online. For a subscription fee, fans can watch each of the 13 shows on drummer Butch Trucks’ Web site, Moogis.com. The concerts get underway on March 11th so head to Moogis.com now to learn more.
RELEASE DATE SET FOR DOORS DOCUMENTARY
There is now a release date for the Johnny Depp-narrated documentary about The Doors. The film, called When You’re Strange: A Film about The Doors, will hit theaters on April 9th. The movie is comprised entirely of archival footage and tells the legendary quartet’s story, giving a previously unseen view of the band at work and play. Meanwhile, the soundtrack to the flick comes out on March 30th. Learn more at

YOKO ONO ON REFORMING THE PLASTIC ONO BAND
Tonight in Brooklyn, Yoko Ono will reunite the Plastic Ono Band for their first live show in 40 years. While it marks the group’s first stage performance in that time, with the help of Ono’s son Sean Lennon, the band got back together recently to work on Yoko’s latest album, Between My Head and the Sky. Yoko told us that Sean, who is now part of the Plastic Ono Band, was the brains behind the reunion, but she wasn’t immediately sold on the idea.
(Cut #5) “Sean asked me. Sean said, ‘Is it alright if you bring Plastic Ono Band up again?’ And I said, ‘Yeah, well, I don’t know about that.’ At first I didn’t think it was a good idea. I don’t know. And then I realized that the reason why I didn’t want to use it was because John passed away and suddenly I had that block, you know.”
Eric Clapton, Bette Midler, Paul Simon and many others will be on stage with the Plastic Ono Band tonight. Learn more at BAM.org.
DEPP WORKING ON KEITH RICHARDS DOCUMENTARY
Johnny Depp is set to direct a documentary about Rolling Stone Keith Richards. In a European interview, Depp revealed he’s working on the flick now and his editor is sorting through tons of concert footage. Johnny went on to say, “I’m very touched that Keith agreed to show up in front of my cameras.” The actor based his “Jack Sparrow” character from The Pirates of the Caribbean films on Keith and Richards even shows up in one of the movies, playing “Sparrow’s” dad. Read more about Depp’s documentary at

ROBERT PLANT SCHEDULES CHARITY CONCERT
Robert Plant has scheduled a charity concert for this month to help the Cancer Research U-K organization. The gig will take place at Abbey Road on February 25th as part of the Sound & Vision event. The Led Zeppelin singer will be joined by singer-songwriter Beth Nielsen Chapman and the London Oriana Choir. Plant described his upcoming performance saying, “My set is quite different from anything I’ve done before, as I’ll be performing with Beth and a full choir on stage.” Bid on special tickets and memorabilia and learn more at SoundAndVisionEbay.com.

Greetings and a fine week to all. The long dry drought in our area seems to be ending as fresh storms are bringing a bit of joy to the thirsty creeks. In the sky, other varmints in bright outfits are preparing to fly over the town in search of killer weed. To me it makes more sense if the money went in flying underprivileged Aboriginal youth on the rides to enjoy the scenic panoramas instead. Immigration remains a challenging issue still for us as well as the challenge of my 3 year old laptop which I had purchased used in the first place is getting ready for a replacement that I can't afford. A major loss this week with the passing of Howard Zenn for which there are several letters posted in my newsletter. Also some interesting articles on perhaps unethical and suspicious activities in Haiti before and after the earthquake.

Whatever you do, you need courage. Whatever course you decide upon, there is always someone to tell you that you are wrong. There are always difficulties arising that tempt you to believe your critics are right. To map out a course of action and follow it to an end requires some of the same courage that a soldier needs. Peace has its victories, but it takes brave men and women to win them: Ralph Waldo Emerson
am convinced that if we are to get on the right side of the world revolution, we as a nation must undergo a radical revolution of values. We must rapidly begin the shift from a "thing-oriented" society to a "person-oriented" society. When machines and computers, profit motives and property rights are considered more important than people, the giant triplets of racism, materialism, and militarism are incapable of being conquered. How many does it take to metamorphose wickedness into righteousness? One man must not kill. If he does, it is murder.... But a state or nation may kill as many as they please, and it is not murder. It is just, necessary, commendable, and right. Only get people enough to agree to it, and the butchery of myriads of human beings is perfectly innocent. But how many does it take?: Adin Ballou, The Non-Resistant, 5 February 1845
=
There have been periods of history in which episodes of terrible violence occurred but for which the word violence was never used.... Violence is shrouded in justifying myths that lend it moral legitimacy, and these myths for the most part kept people from recognizing the violence for what it was. The people who burned witches at the stake never for one moment thought of their act as violence; rather they thought of it as an act of divinely mandated righteousness. The same can be said of most of the violence we humans have ever committed: ~Gil Bailie
That the aggressor, who puts himself into the state of war with another, and unjustly invades another man's right, can, by such an unjust war, never come to have a right over the conquered, will be easily agreed by all men, who will not think that robbers and pirates have a right of empire over whomsoever they have force enough to master, or that men are bound by promises which unlawful force extorts from them.
Should a robber break into my house, and, with a dagger at my throat, make me seal deeds to convey my estate to him, would this give him any title? Just such a title by his sword has an unjust conqueror who forces me into submission. The injury and the crime is equal, whether committed by the wearer of a crown or some petty villain.
The title of the offender and the number of his followers make no difference in the offence, unless it be to aggravate it. The only difference is, great robbers punish little ones to keep them in their obedience; but the great ones are rewarded with laurels and triumphs, because they are too big for the weak hands of justice in this world, and have the power in their own possession which should punish offenders." John Locke -
"The lesson of that history is that you must not despair, that if you are right, and you persist, things will change. The government will try to deceive the people, and the newspapers and television may do the same, but the truth has a way of coming out. The truth has a power greater than a hundred lies. My hope is that you will not be content to be successful in the way our society measures success; that you will not obey the rules, when the rules are unjust; that you will act out the courage that I know is in you." Howard Zinn - Address to Spelman College, 2005
=
"to engage in whatever nonviolent actions appeal to us. There is no act too small, no act too bold. The history of social change is the history of millions of actions, small and large, coming together at critical points to create a power that governments cannot suppress. We find ourselves today at one of those critical points." - Howard Zinn
One of the saddest lessons of history is this: If we've been bamboozled long enough, we tend to reject any evidence of the bamboozle. We're no longer interested in finding out the truth. The bamboozle has captured us. It is simply too painful to acknowledge -- even to ourselves -- that we've been so credulous: Carl Sagan
=
They have always taught and trained you to believe it to be your patriotic duty to go to war and to have yourselves slaughtered at their command. But in all the history of the world you, the people, have never had a voice in declaring war: Eugene Debs
There is almost no kind of outrage-----torture, imprisonment without trial, assassination, the bombing of civilians-----which does not change its moral color when it is committed by 'our' side. The nationalist not only does not disapprove of atrocities committed by his own side, he has a remarkable capacity for not even hearing about them." : George Orwell
=
"As long as I have any choice in the matter, I shall live only in a country where civil liberty, tolerance and equality of all citizens before the law prevail.": Albert Einstein, upon leaving Germany in 1933
"To be hopeful in bad times is not just foolishly romantic, it is based on the fact that human history is a history not only of cruelty, but also of compassion, sacrifice, courage, kindness -- and if we do act, in however small a way, we don't have to wait for some grand utopian future. The future is an infinite succession of presents, and to live now, as we think human beings should live, in defiance of all that is bad around us, is itself, a marvelous victory." - Howard Zinn
"To be hopeful in bad times is not just foolishly romantic. It is based on the fact that human history is a history not only of cruelty, but also of compassion, sacrifice, courage, kindness. What we choose to emphasize in this complex history will determine our lives. If we see only the worst, it destroys our capacity to do something. If we remember those times and places -- and there are so many -- where people have behaved magnificently, this gives us the energy to act, and at least the possibility of sending this spinning top of a world in a different direction." Howard Zinn:

"Each time a person stands up for an ideal, or acts to improve the lot of others, or strikes out against injustice, he sends forth a tiny ripple of hope, and crossing each other from a million different centers of energy and daring, these ripples build a current that can sweep down the mightiest walls of oppression and resistance". Robert F. Kennedy:
"Not only is another world possible, she is on her way. On a quiet day, I can hear her breathing." Arundhati Roy:

"Courage, it would seem, is nothing less than the power to overcome danger, misfortune, fear, injustice, while continuing to affirm inwardly that life with all its sorrows is good; that everything is meaningful even if in a sense beyond our understanding; and that there is always tomorrow". Dorothy Thompson:
=
"Hope is both the earliest and the most indispensable virtue inherent in the state of being alive. If life is to be sustained hope must remain, even where confidence is wounded, trust impaired". Erik H. Erikson:

PUNMASTER MUSIC ARTICLES:

Teddy Pendergrass, Singer, Dies at 59

PHILADELPHIA (AP) -- Teddy Pendergrass, who became R&B's reigning ladies man in the 1970s and '80s with his forceful, masculine voice and passionate love ballads and later became an inspirational figure after suffering a devastating car accident that left him paralyzed, died Wednesday at age 59.

The singer's son, Teddy Pendergrass II, said his father died at a hospital in suburban Philadelphia. The singer underwent colon cancer surgery eight months ago and had ''a difficult recovery,'' his son said.

''To all his fans who loved his music, thank you,'' his son said. ''He will live on through his music.''

Pendergrass suffered a spinal cord injury and was paralyzed from the waist down in the 1982 car accident. He spent six months in a hospital but returned to recording the next year with the album ''Love Language.''

He returned to the stage at the Live Aid concert in 1985, performing from his wheelchair.

Pendergrass later founded the Teddy Pendergrass Alliance, an organization whose mission is to encourage and help people with spinal cord injuries achieve their maximum potential in education, employment, housing, productivity and independence, according to its Web site.

Pendergrass, who was born in Philadelphia on March 26, 1950, gained popularity first as a member of Harold Melvin & the Blue Notes.

In 1971, the group signed a record deal with the legendary writer/producers Kenny Gamble and Leon Huff. The group released it first single, ''I Miss You,'' in 1972 and then released ''If You Don't Know Me by Now,'' which was nominated for a Grammy Award.

Pendergrass quit the group in 1975 and embarked on a solo career in 1976. It was his solo hits that brought him his greatest fame. With songs such as ''Love T.K.O.,'' ''Close the Door'' and ''I Don't Love You Anymore,'' he came to define a new era of black male singers with his powerful, aggressive vocals that spoke to virility, not vulnerability. His lyrics were never coarse, as those of later male R&B stars would be.

''Turn Off the Lights'' was a tune that perhaps best represented the many moods of Pendergrass.

Pendergrass, the first black male singer to record five consecutive multi-platinum albums, made women swoon with each note, and his concerts were a testament to that adulation, with infamous stories of women throwing their underwear on stage for his affection.

Following the car accident, it was 19 years before Pendergrass resumed performing concerts. He made his return on Memorial Day weekend in 2001, with two sold-out shows in Atlantic City, N.J.
Pendergrass is survived by his son, two daughters, his wife, his mother and nine grandchildren.

by Paul Cashmere

Singer-songwriter Bobby Charles, who wrote `See You Later Alligator` and `Walking To New Orleans`, has died at the age of 71.

Charles was at the height of his fame in the 50s when Bill Haley recorded ‘See You Later Alligator’ and Fats Domino recorded ‘Walking To New Orleans’.

Charles also wrote the Clarence ‘Frogman’ Henry song ‘(I Don’t Know Why I Love You) But I Do’, featured more recently in Forrest Gump.

Charles performed with Dr John and The Band for ‘The Last Waltz’ in 1976. While that song did not make the movie, he is seen performing ‘I Shall Be Released’ with Bob Dylan later in the movie.

Charles collapsed and died at his home in Abbeville on January 14

Ringo Starr Cannot Play Rock Band

Ringo Starr cannot wrap his head around The Beatles Rock Band computer band.

The musician – who was the drummer in the Fab Four – has tried to beat the virtual skins but struggles to replicate his parts virtually.

He said: 'I’m absolutely c**p at it. We tried it when they were putting it together and they’d bring all these geniuses out to play it. It’s too frantic for me.'

Ringo, 69, thinks he is now too old to master computer games and wants to live the fun to the younger generation.

He added to US TV talk show host: 'The graphics are great, I love the game and I love the music. But it’s for young folk.'

Meanwhile, Ringo has revealed he wants all of his fans to join him and display his signature V-shaped 'peace' hand gesture at noon on his 70th birthday.

The star will be seeing in the landmark day on July 7 with a planned concert at New York's Radio City Music Hall and before the show starts he wants as many people as possible to spread the message of "peace and love'.

He said: "We have big plans to do an all star tour this summer. We'll be in New York on July 7 which is my birthday and we're going to celebrate. No matter what state you're in, at noon wherever you are I'd like you to gesture peace and love."

Ringo isn’t the only member of the legendary group unable to get to grips with the game.

Bassist Sir Paul McCartney down the chance to recreate his biggest hits on the game, but his grandchildren 10-year-old Arthur and Elliott, seven - the children of his daughter Mary – love it.

Creative Producer Giles Martin - the son of Beatles producer Sir George Martin - said: "Paul held the instrument and was asked if he wanted to play. He said, 'To be honest I was in the band the first time round.'

"I was at Abbey Road studios when Paul was there. He was with his daughters Beatrice and Mary, who had her boys with her and I said to the boys, 'Do you want to play the game pretending to be your grandfather?' They loved it."

---Is In Intensive Care

Legendary singer Phoebe Snow, 58, suffered a brain hemorrhage on Tuesday,
January 19, and has undergone life-saving emergency surgery. Doctors for
the Grammy-nominated singer-songwriter said that the surgery went very
well. Snow is hospitalized in an undisclosed medical center.

"Phoebe is a very strong person and she is stable now. It is too early to
assess any residual motor damage, and we are taking it day-by-day, but
doctors are hopeful for a complete recovery," said Snow's manager, Sue
Cameron. "She was very excited about starting engagements with her new

RINGO’S VOICE WON’T BE IN YELLOW SUBMARINE REMAKE
This week, director Robert Zemeckis announced the voice cast of his 3-D remake of The Beatles’ animated film Yellow Submarine. We caught up with one of the Beatles, Mr. Ringo Starr, who explained to us what he knows about the flick.
(Cut #1) “So far, we’ve seen artists’ sheets of how it could look. I’ve had a moment with the director, we sat around for an hour in L-A, and we’ve had a committee and we’ve said yes. Paul [McCartney] and I have said yes and it’s gonna be great!”
In the original film, none of the Fab Four voiced their characters and that will be the case for the remake as well, even though Zemeckis had wanted McCartney and Starr to do their voices. Ringo told us why he turned the director down.
(Cut #2) “I was asked to do me and I said no because you can’t get two of us anyway. And I don’t sound like that now, I mean, I think I’ve lost me accent but I know I haven’t.”
That being the case, Zemeckis is still hoping the legendary musicians lend their voice in some aspect but Ringo let us know that isn’t going to happen either.
(Cut #3) “Yeah, I could play someone else you mean? No.”
Zemeckis is hoping to release the Yellow Submarine in 2012, just in time for the London Olympics. In the meantime, you can hear Ringo on his latest solo album. It’s called Y Not and is on shelves now.
JOHNNY CASH’S AMERICAN VI COMING OUT NEXT MONTH
Next month, Johnny Cash’s American VI: Ain’t No Grave album will hit shelves. The set is the sixth and final installment of the singer’s American Recordings series and is due out on February 26th – what would have been The Man In Black’s 78th birthday. In 2002, before the completion of American IV: The Man Comes Around, Cash recorded music with producer Rick Rubin. The songs came out on American V: A Hundred Highways and another will be on American VI. That tune is called “I Corinthians 15:55” and has never before been heard. Sheryl Crow, Kris Kristofferson and many others also add tracks to American VI. For all the news on Cash, head to JohnnyCash.com.
RONNIE WOOD BREAKS UP WITH NEW GIRLFRIEND
We just reported that Ronnie Wood had a new, young girlfriend, but now, England’s The Sun is claiming the two have split, just one day after they were photographed together for the first time. The Rolling Stone was seeing 26-year-old Hannah Kamelmacher, who told the paper Wood was an “engaging gentleman” who she had fun with on their first dates, but went on to say that their last few encounters were “very challenging” for her before she added, “I would not want to see him again.” Ouch. MICKEY HART GOES OUT OF THIS WORLD
Grateful Dead percussionist Mickey Hart has teamed up with many people during his career, but his latest collaboration is pretty interesting. Hart has paired with Nobel Prize-winning physicist George Smoot to investigate the sounds that celestial objects make. Smoot, who showed evidence of the Big Bang theory, worked with Hart to convert light and electromagnetic waves from the universe into music. Some of those sounds were even played during the recent Dead tour. Today, the scientist and the drummer will share their findings and music during a presentation titled Rhythms of the Universe at the Essential Cosmology for the Next Generation conference in Mexico.

Dennis Hopper Close To Death
by Paul Cashmere
Movie legend Dennis Hopper is just days away from death after a battle with prostrate cancer but in these final days has made a bizarre decision.
Hopper, star of Easy Rider, Rumble Fish, Apocalypse Now and Speed, has filed for divorce from his wife of 14 years Victoria Hopper.
Victoria is the fifth wife of the screen legend and mother of his 6-year old daughter Galen.
By filing for divorce, it is thought that the actor is trying to cut Victoria from his will. With just days to live, Hooper is citing “irreconcilable differences”.
Dennis Hopper only discovered that he had cancer in October 2009 when he was admitted to hospital with flu-like symptoms.
The marriage to Victoria is the longest marriage Hopper had. In 1970, he married Michelle Phillips and divorced 8-days later.

LOS ANGELES - Sly Stone sued a former business manager and others on Thursday, claiming tens of millions of dollars in royalties were kept from the singer who now depends on Social Security to survive.
Stone, whose real name is Sylvester Stewart, was the frontman of the 1970s funk group Sly and The Family Stone.
He sued former manager Gerald Goldstein and several companies in Los Angeles, alleging they kept 20 years of royalty payments and leveraged Stone's work and rights to accumulate as much as $80 million in assets.
The complaint said Stone has been homeless at times and is dependent on Social Security. Goldstein paid Stone some money until 2007, when the payments stopped, the lawsuit states.
Stone depended on Goldstein to handle his financial affairs, the suit states.
"Some of these artists are being robbed of their intellectual property and the fruits of their genius by unscrupulous people who prey on their trusting nature and lack of business and legal knowledge," Stone's attorney Robert J. Allan wrote in a statement.
Goldstein has produced numerous other artists. Efforts to reach him for comment were unsuccessful.
The lawsuit claims nearly 20 causes of action against Goldstein and other defendants, including allegations of fraud, breach of contract, unjust enrichment and breach of fiduciary duty.
The legal action claims Goldstein, his longtime companion Claire Levine and attorney Glenn Stone set
up several companies to divert royalty payments and borrow against Stone's work.
A working phone number could not be located for Levine. A New York number registered to Glenn Stone and Goldstein's Avenue Records has been disconnected.
Some of Sly Stone's hits include "Dance to the Music," "Everyday People" and "Family Affair."
The lawsuit offered a candid look at the musician's life since his hit-maker days, including tax troubles, bouts with drug addiction and living in poverty.
The suit is seeking a full accounting of royalties due to Stone, and an accounting of several companies the suit claims Goldstein and others used to divert royalties.
All-star concert honors life of Norton Buffalo
Joel Selvin, Chronicle Senior Pop Music Correspondent
Monday, January 25, 2010
Nobody ever knew anybody like Norton Buffalo. It was his gift to make anyone he met feel like his friend. He played on more than 180 albums, and every one of the musicians who hired him thought he was their friend.
When Buffalo was diagnosed with lung cancer in September after getting off his summer tour with the Steve Miller Band, his longtime bandleader and close friend talked to Buffalo about putting together a benefit concert.
Three days before he died, a few short weeks later, Buffalo OKd Miller's plans to bring some of Buffalo's friends together for a pair of concerts that took place over the weekend at Oakland's recently refurbished Fox Theater.
He died knowing that friends and admirers like Miller, the Doobie Brothers, Bonnie Raitt, Charlie Musselwhite, George Thorogood and Huey Lewis agreed to play the shows. He told Miller he wanted the proceeds to pay off his mortgage.
Over the 33 years Buffalo played in his band, Miller did more than 5,000 shows with Buffalo, singing every song together. Miller introduced Buffalo every night as "my partner in harmony." Buffalo's death punched a hole in his heart. His widow, Lisa Flores, visited Miller's hotel room Saturday afternoon and gave him Buffalo's signature hat, scarf and his favorite harmonica.
"This is hard," he said, standing on the side of the stage after introducing the opening act, Buffalo's own band, the Knockouts.
Buffalo's baby sister Josephine walked up to Miller on the side of the stage and introduced herself. Miller held her in a close embrace and they talked intensely. "I can't get my head around the fact that he's dead," he told her.
Who can? All night, a procession of his musician colleagues took the stage and spoke of his spirit, his generosity, his talent, his goofy humor, his extraordinary love of mankind. Bonnie Raitt delivered extravagant, heartfelt praise and then launched a wrenching bottleneck blues on acoustic guitar, "I Can't Get Over You."
After her performance, she huddled with Miller on the side of the stage, their foreheads practically touching, arms over each other's shoulders. Miller emerged weeping. At that exact moment, Elvin Bishop walked up to Miller with a small gift: a bottle of homemade hot sauce from peppers Bishop grows in his Lagunitas backyard. Miller uncapped the bottle and took a swig, as Bishop's eyes widened.
"I've never seen it done like that," Bishop said.
"It stopped me from crying," said Miller, smiling.
All the musicians paid their own expenses - travel, hotel, food - and some went to extraordinary lengths to be there. Ricky Peterson, Raitt's keyboard player, missed the Friday show because of weather conditions in Minnesota, where he lives. Marin County utility keyboard man Audie de Lone substituted, but Peterson was there for the second night to play a spectacular keyboard duet with Raitt on
"Nick of Time" (Huey Lewis never made it out of snowy Montana).
The shows and silent auction seemed to be on target to raise the $250,000 goal, enough to cover his medical expenses and retire his mortgage.
The five-hour concert laid out a banquet of music. Everybody played with everybody. Bishop joined the Doobie Brothers to sing his song "My Dog" and rattle off some blistering guitar. He came back to play with Miller and add still more blistering guitar. Blues harmonica virtuoso Musselwhite sat in with Raitt, the Doobies and Miller. Raitt traded molten blues guitar solos with the boys - Miller and Bishop - during the Miller band set and sang "Listen to the Music" with the Doobies.
George Thorogood played Bo Diddley with Miller, shaking Buffalo's maracas. Michael Carabello of the original Santana band took over for Buffalo on congas in Miller's set. Miller himself played the harmonica part to "Livin' in the U.S.A." - like he did before and hasn't since Buffalo joined the band in 1977.
The party flowed backstage. With a couple hundred sporting backstage passes, old friends were seeing one another for the first time in years in every corner. Freddie Herrera, who ran the Keystone Berkeley nightclub through the '70s and '80s, a silver-haired fox about to celebrate his 75th birthday, knelt in front of a bench holding George Thorogood, Elvin Bishop and Pat Simmons of the Doobie Brothers and hugged all of them at once.
Attorney General Jerry Brown, who as mayor oversaw the downtown Oakland development that the new Fox anchors, wandered around backstage, looking a little like he showed up at the wrong party. Of course, the entire place did reek of marijuana smoke.
Buffalo was everywhere. His friends told each other stories about him. Thorogood told about Buffalo telling him that he went to prisons to give inmates music lessons on different instruments in his spare time. "Spare time?" said Thorogood. When Buffalo wasn't with Miller, he did dates all over the country with Roy Rogers and when they weren't working, he played smaller gigs with the Knockouts. When he was home in Paradise (Butte County), he worked in a trio with his wife.
Miller promised Buffalo he would take care of his music. The Steve Miller Band has a new album in the can with Buffalo on every track. The musicians at the Fox talked about making the Norton memorial an annual event. People are only now beginning to get around to understanding what a huge loss this is.
